BH Cosmetics Hanging in Hawaii Palette Review + Swatches + 3 Looks

If the BH Cosmetics Hanging in Hawaii Palette isn’t the perfect Summer Palette I don’t know what is. I first swatched BH Cosmetics eyeshadows while at an Ulta in Hawaii this past December, and it started my BH Cosmetics obsession. It was my first time trying their eyeshadows and I walked out of that Ulta covered in makeup. My family seemed confused about why I had tiger stripes of eyeshadow all over my arms, but as any makeup lover knows, you have to swatch it! (Maybe not right now precisely with Covid going on, but you know what I mean). I always have makeup on the back of my hands!

Although the BH Cosmetics Hanging in Hawaii palette is mostly neutral, those neutral shades are the bomb! They’re so smooth, so pigmented, so blendable, and the addition of some warm oranges and pinks makes it something I want to reach for on any Summer long weekend or hot sunny day. This is the third palette I’ve reviewed in BH’s travel palette series, and it’s just as amazing as the other two.

BH Cosmetics Hanging in Hawaii Palette Review

The BH Cosmetics Hanging in Hawaii palette is the perfect Summer or vacation palette. It retails for $16 and contains 16 shadows in a mix of matte and high shine metallic finishes. I highly recommend BH Cosmetics’ travel series palettes! The only two I don’t have are the Beautiful in Barcelona and Trendy in Tokyo palettes, and you can bet they’re on my wishlist.

The bright pink & palm tree design really shouts vacation vibes. I feel like I should be sipping a mimosa and eating pineapple for breakfast when I look at it! These are actually shades that I would bring on vacation with me as well, when I travel I usually don’t go for extra colourful makeup. I prefer neutrals with maybe a pop of a wearable colour, like a pink or orange.

I appreciate that these palettes are cardboard instead of plastic. My plastic palettes never hold up the way cardboard palettes do. They have a tendency to crack, and provide next to no cushion when dropped. A plastic palette is far more likely to experience eyeshadow cracking and crumbling when dropped. A cardboard palette absorbs the impact much better.

Colour Story

I’m loving these sandy & sunny neutrals! This is the perfect combination of warm & cool (but mostly warm) tan shades with some fun oranges & pinks for a pops of colour. The mattes actually remind me a lot of the Too Faced Peachy Mattes Palette, however I don’t think it would be a fair comparison because Hanging in Hawaii also contains some gorgeous & shiny metallics to go along with the mattes.

I rarely wear a completely matte look, I love shimmers on my eyes too much! This palette is the perfect compromise where you could easily put together an all matte look but you have some gorgeous champagne and bronze shimmers. There’s even a deeper plum metallic shade, Luau which is great for a more dramatic look, or placed on the edges of the eyelids to build depth within your look.

Other shades that I find useful are Hula, which is my go to browbone and inner corner highlight, Honolulu, which is great as an eyeliner, and Paradise which I’ve actually used as a blush!

BH Hanging In Hawaii Peach Eyeshadow Shades

Pigmentation, Fallout & Blend

This palette performs very much the same as my other BH Cosmetics palettes, with the exception of Glam Rosé which has a harder pressed formula. These shades are incredibly soft to the touch and quite pigmented. The metallics swatch & wear beautifully applied wet or dry, and the mattes blend out with minimal effort. They don’t disappear while blending or skip on the eyelids, which is a must!

The mattes remind me a little bit of the matte formula in my ABH soft Glam palette. The metallics aren’t quite the same, but their extra pigmented and buttery smooth quality is similar.

Because the shadows are so soft there is going to be fallout. Tapping out my brush helps reduce it, but I generally plan to do my eyes first.

I don’t have anything bad to say about these shadows, the formula is rock solid.

I did these swatches without any primer. They apply much more pigmented with a brush, especially over primer. It’s actually odd when a palette is much more pigmented during actual uses than applied with stencils, but that is certainly the case here. I hope you can see how reflective the metallic shades are!

Also I have to mention just how much I love this nail polish. This is Essie Of Quartz and it is stunning! You must check out this shade if you don’t have a champagne shimmer polish already.

Makeup Looks

Look #1

I’ve been wearing this second bolder look quite a bit this summer. The orange on the outer corners and deeper pink shimmer look really pretty together.

I applied the shimmers wet this time, and instead of making them look ultra metallic these BH Cosmetics shimmers take on a “wet” quality when you apply them with some setting spray. They’ll still look wet after the shadow dries and I love the effect!

It’s actually rare that I wear eyeliner these days, so I left one look pretty simple with just a short pair of lashes to go with it.

Everyday Bronze Eyeshadow Look

Look #2

I love that even with all of the pinks and oranges you can still create a good old bronze neutral eye with the Hanging in Hawaii Palette. The high shine metallics are really something special.

The palette has a couple different shades of brown, some are more warm and some are cooler so you can really create any type of look with it. This look is a halo eye with some of the Waikiki shimmer on the outer edges and a combo of Sandy and Pineapple on the center of the eyelids. I can’t get enough of Sandy!

Pink Eyeshadow Look

Look #3

I couldn’t finish this review without doing something with the bright pink Paradise shade! I basically just placed it all over my eyelids. It’s very bold, and I love it!

I think I’ve been in a bit of a creative rut so it was fun to do something more colourful than usual.

What do you think of the Hanging in Hawaii Palette?

I’m really loving this eyeshadow palette. I know it’s neutral and probably unnecessary with my current makeup collection but the formula is excellent and these are shades I’ll reach for often. I think it was a great buy.

I have about four other palettes to review right now, but all I want to do is reach for this one! I guess I’ll have to set it aside for a while…

Thanks for reading! x

I’ve actually been using the Hanging in Hawaii Palette! After seeing this review, I knew I wanted to play with it. I’ve been loving it! I ended up giving the midnight city palette to my sister since I bought so many. She really likes it!

    • October 9, 2020 / 7:28 pm

Yay! I’m so happy you love it too. The shadows are so buttery.

This palette looks like so much fun! I know BH shadows are such good quality, especially for the money, I need to try more!

    • October 6, 2020 / 8:59 pm

Yes they are! I couldn’t believe how good they were when I tried them, I was missing out for so long. I hope you get to try some more in the future!

I’ve been enjoying playing with their palettes so much, I’ve been away and dealing with things so I haven’t created anything new for nearly a month, but anyway, this palette looks so pretty, i would definitely get it if it was on sale or something LOL
the swatches look so adorable, I love that you used those seahorse swatches 😀
i also love the looks you came up with, i’ve been on a creative rut too, i haven’t had any cool ideas to try.
nice to see you back, you’ve been gone for a while but then again, we al need some time to step away and take care of ourselves or just take it easy instead of constantly staying busy 🙂

    • October 6, 2020 / 8:54 pm

Wow I am forever behind on comments! But I’m done my class now so I can finally catch up lol
BH definitely has a lot of sales! I’ve never seen a seahorse in real life, but Hawaii seems like a good place for the swatches haha.
Thanks Rossy! I think I need to start changing up content, I’ve just been posting a review or two every few months. It’s been a lot harder to keep up with blogging since I became full time at my job last year. I don’t think I’ll ever return to three posts a week but I’d like to post a little bit more often than I am now. Plus I miss all my blogging friends!

      • October 16, 2020 / 1:50 pm

No worries, I am behind on everything too and have not been able to take the time to read anyone’s blogs in over a month, so I think I’m giving up and only going back as far as one week LOL
And yes, BH has lots of sales all the time so I always try and take advantage 🙂
Girl, I think your content is great regardless of what you post. I had been doing lots of lookbooks and palette reviews for a while too so I am trying to regroup too. Honestly, just go with whatever YOU want to post 🙂 I think I will be doing once a week too and I also miss everyone 🙁 it feels so weird being away for so long. I hope you have been well and that you’re also taking time out for yourself 🙂 sending lots of love your way 🙂 say hello to your kitties for me 😀

        • October 16, 2020 / 4:53 pm

lol makes sense! I feel like my replies are so outdated by the time I get around to them.

Yes I like the sound of that. I’ve made peace with this being just a hobby for me, so I might as well have fun and post what I want! Maybe we can find some time to do a winter collab at some point? I’m FINALLY done my course and am recovering from the burnout of doing too much at once haha
Awww I’ll give quantum and Ion some pets for you. They’ll appreciate it 🙂 Hope you’re doing well!

          • October 20, 2020 / 3:04 pm

I’d love to do a winter collab, gives me time to plan 🙂 and yay, glad you’re done! i’m sure you did stellar! 😀

          • October 20, 2020 / 9:54 pm

Yay! I’m looking forward to it 😁

  4. September 2, 2020 / 4:14 pm

Can you believe that I saw this post and ended up splurging and buying a whole bunch of BH cosmetic palettes!? They were having a huge sale, and so I got some palettes for $8! I even got a palette for free with my order. The looks you’ve been creating with these travel palettes have been so beautiful, I’m completely obsessed. I can’t wait for them to come in the mail. Great post xxx

Wow $8!! That’s such a steal! I hope they arrive soon and you love them as much as I do. Which palettes did you get??

Sorry I’ve been behind on responding, I’m in the middle of prepping for my microeconomics final so I’ve been extra busy. I hope to catch up on your posts again soon

      • September 8, 2020 / 4:27 pm

okay, so i definitely went overboard…I got the mimosa palette, beautiful in barcelona, summer in st. tropez, & hanging in hawaii! Then they included the midnight city palette for free.

and no need to apologize, i totally get it! It’s been taking me forever to comment back. I wish you luck on your final 🙂 x

        • October 6, 2020 / 8:45 pm

How are you going to decide what to use first!? I hope you love everything, let me know how that Midnight City palette is! I keep looking at it on the site.

I really wanted this palette when it first came out! I just have so many eyeshadow palettes with a similar colour story, so I decided not to go for it. The palette sounds dreamy and the looks you created are gorgeous. The only BH Cosmetics palette I’ve tried is the Opalescent palette and whilst I love the shimmers, the mattes are so patchy. I find it interesting that this palette seems to work so well overall because I didn’t have the same experience with the palette I own. Maybe I should try this palette to test the difference!

    • September 3, 2020 / 8:16 am

That’s too bad about the opalescent palette! I’ve only had a good experience with the BH palettes I’ve tried. I wonder what’s different about that one 🤔 Patchy mattes are no good!

  6. August 20, 2020 / 3:06 am

I have a palette from BH Cosmetics in collaboration with a YouTuber and the quality is stunning, the shadows are so buttery and pigmented and they apply so well on the eyes! The colours in this palette are really pretty, I can understand why you keep wanting to reach for it 🙂 Love the first and second looks you created x

    • August 23, 2020 / 12:01 am

Their formula is so incredible! Which Youtuber collab do you have? There are quite a few on their site now, I’ve been eyeing a few.
      Thanks for reading! x
