Hello Lovelies! I’ve been pondering what makeup collection to feature next in my Break It Down series. I scroll through the latest beauty news on Trendmood everyday and sometimes nothing stands out to me. A few days ago I was scrolling when I saw the teaser for a new ColourPop collaboration with Zoe Sugg, also known as Zoella.
I’ll be honest, I’m not a Zoe fan girl. I don’t have anything against her, I just feel like she’s unrelateable with her unattainable lifestyle and 12 million subs on YouTube. This seems like an odd choice for ColourPop when they’ve been having so many requests to collaborate with smaller YouTube channels like Jkissa & Thatgirlshae (both of which I would buy). Go big or go home I guess? Not only that but there were tons of comments on the reveal post questioning why ColourPop would collaborate with “Scamella” after her Advent Calender debacle of 2017 where she charged 50 pounds for a 12 door calendar full of stickers, markers & confetti. I mean… that’s technically not a “scam”, but it’s pretty bad.
The collection is called Brunch Date and it released on February 27th (today!). The packaging is cute… but what about the products? Let’s talk the ColourPop X Zoella Brunch Date Collection!

ColourPop X Zoella Brunch Date Collection
The Brunch Date collection includes an eyeshadow palette, pressed powder blush, pressed powder highlighter, 2x super nova liquid eyeshadows, 2x cream gel liners, 3x lippie pencils and 3x Ultra Matte Lipsticks. There is also a clear makeup bag available for purchase.
I actually love the packaging with waffles & strawberries but it doesn’t feel very “ColourPop” to me if you know what I mean. That being said, what is ColourPop? They’re always changing up their packaging for new collections & products, so describing ColourPop is getting nebulous.
So without further ado let’s talk about the products in the collection…
Brunch Date Eyeshadow Palette
The Brunch Date palette retails for $18 and is in a longer, skinnier style palette. The palette includes 12 x 1g shades and a mirror. This palette actually contains more product than ColourPop’s other 12 pan cardboard palettes, they usually contain 12 x 0.85g shades. Even though you’re paying extra for the mirror you technically get more bang for your buck.
I do think that the Brunch Date palette packaging is cute. The little waffle squares on the palette make me think of the chocolate bar palettes from Too Faced & Makeup Revolution, even though they’re completely different xD. The inside of the palette however is a different story. Zoella was probably trying to be cute with the two heart shaped eyeshadow pans. They have a little white squiggly outline so I think she was trying to make them look like heart shaped eggs? I dunno. I think the eyeshadows should have been yellow or orange to properly convey that! Pink yolks are kind of weird.
The Colour story is… boring? Haven’t we seen all those neutral bronze & pink shades before? The pop of blue is interesting, but there’s already a beautiful blue in the Mar Palette so I wouldn’t buy this just for that blue shade. I think she was hoping for syrupy pancake & waffle shades which in theory is nice but in reality translates to boring neutrals.
Will I purchase? Do I really have to ask? I’ll pass, thanks!
Brunch Date Pressed Powder Highlighter & Blush
The pressed powder highlighter & blush in the Brunch Date Collection are the usual 6g sizes offered at ColourPop but they retail for $8USD, which is $1 more than their non-collab pressed powder products.
ColourPop doesn’t have the option listed to purchase just the product pans minus the packaging to put into an empty palette. I don’t feel like I would buy a blush & highlighter from ColourPop just because it’s Zoella. I haven’t so far and these two products aren’t what’s going to nudge me into making a purchase.
The compact design with the hearts doesn’t appeal to me, they look kind of childish to me but whatevs. The blush shade is called Soulmate and is a soft pink to go with the peach highlight shade Swipe Right.
I’m interested to try their pressed powder blushes (I’ve been eyeing Rom Com) but I found the ColourPop pressed powder highlighters in my This Is For You Highlighter palette to be very subtle which isn’t what I like in a highlight. I recently tried out the Dream Sequence Super Shock Highlighter Palette and that formula is much more my speed.
Will I purchase? Unfortunately Not.
Zoella Super Nova Liquid Shadows
I’ve already mentioned this on my blog but in case you guys don’t already know, I dislike ColourPop’s Super Nova Shadows. They’re not my favourite, the glitter is chunky and lifts the eyeshadow under it when I try to wear it as an eyeshadow topper.
The two shades are OG, which is described a “golden champagne sprinkled with silver glitter” and Bellini, a rose gold metallic shade. I don’t know about you guys but I think both shades look incredibly similar in the tubes :S Is it just me? Am I crazy?
You can buy both 4.7g shades in the collection individually for $7USD or in the Group Hug Set for $14. You don’t save any money buying both.
Will I purchase? No, not because it’s Zoella but because I don’t like the formula.
Crème Gel Liners
I’ve been wanting to try ColourPop’s crème gel liners for a while so I’m happy that there will be more colours available soon! The Brunch Date Liners aren’t the most colorful of liners though, I was kind of hoping for something more exciting. That being said I really like the look of the chocolate brown liner, Sincerely Yours. The shade XOXO is a charcoal shade and I can’t see myself reaching for it over a black.
Both Crème Gel Liners contain 0.2g of product and retail for $5USD.
Will I purchase? Yes, I think I will actually pick up Sincerely Yours once my no-buy is over.
Brunch Date Lip Bundles
These products will all be sold individually but you can also purchase them as a lip duos. Each set ncludes a matte liquid lipstick & a lippie pencil. Each bundle retails for $11.50USD. I probably wouldn’t reach for either of the pink duos, My Day Ones or What Happens at Brunch. They’re very ordinary looking nude shades that I probably already have in my collection. I really like the look of the Strawberry Red bundle, Give us the Goss. It’s really the only shade that actually makes me think of brunch! Strawberries & whipped cream on your pancakes anyone?
I like ColourPop’s Ultra Matte Lip formula. Some people say it’s too drying but I’ve never had an issue with it. If any of these shades appeal to you I think it’s a good buy.
Will I purchase? Probably not, but I love the look of the red lipstick!
What do you think of the ColourPop X Zoella Bunch Date Collection?
The ColourPop Brunch Date collection doesn’t impress me. The Brunch Date palette is a hard no, I think buying another neutral palette with one pop of colour right now is a waste of money. The Supernova shadows are also not going to be gracing my vanity anytime soon. The blush & highlight are pretty, though not necessary in my current collection. The créme gel liners would make a good addition to what I currently have and if I ever have money again after purchasing our house next month I might pick up the Give us the Goss lip bundle.
I REALLY hope ColourPop starts reading the comments on their release posts and considers collaborating with “smaller” channels with under 1 million followers. There are so many fantastic YouTubers out there that aren’t as widely known and I think many of them would come up with amazing things. JKISSA 2019, please!
