Break It Down: ColourPop x Zoella Brunch Date Collection

Hello Lovelies! I’ve been pondering what makeup collection to feature next in my Break It Down series. I scroll through the latest beauty news on Trendmood everyday and sometimes nothing stands out to me. A few days ago I was scrolling when I saw the teaser for a new ColourPop collaboration with Zoe Sugg, also known as Zoella.

I’ll be honest, I’m not a Zoe fan girl. I don’t have anything against her, I just feel like she’s unrelateable with her unattainable lifestyle and 12 million subs on YouTube. This seems like an odd choice for ColourPop when they’ve been having so many requests to collaborate with smaller YouTube channels like Jkissa & Thatgirlshae (both of which I would buy). Go big or go home I guess? Not only that but there were tons of comments on the reveal post questioning why ColourPop would collaborate with “Scamella” after her Advent Calender debacle of 2017 where she charged 50 pounds for a 12 door calendar full of stickers, markers & confetti. I mean… that’s technically not a “scam”, but it’s pretty bad.

The collection is called Brunch Date and it released on February 27th (today!). The packaging is cute… but what about the products? Let’s talk the ColourPop X Zoella Brunch Date Collection!

ColourPop Zoella Brunch Date Collection _ Break It Down

ColourPop X Zoella Brunch Date Collection

The Brunch Date collection includes an eyeshadow palette, pressed powder blush, pressed powder highlighter, 2x super nova liquid eyeshadows, 2x cream gel liners, 3x lippie pencils and 3x Ultra Matte Lipsticks. There is also a clear makeup bag available for purchase.

I actually love the packaging with waffles & strawberries but it doesn’t feel very “ColourPop” to me if you know what I mean. That being said, what is ColourPop? They’re always changing up their packaging for new collections & products, so describing ColourPop is getting nebulous.

So without further ado let’s talk about the products in the collection…

ColourPop X Zoella Brunch Date Palette

Brunch Date Eyeshadow Palette

The Brunch Date palette retails for $18 and is in a longer, skinnier style palette. The palette includes 12 x 1g shades and a mirror. This palette actually contains more product than ColourPop’s other 12 pan cardboard palettes, they usually contain 12 x 0.85g shades. Even though you’re paying extra for the mirror you technically get more bang for your buck.

I do think that the Brunch Date palette packaging is cute. The little waffle squares on the palette make me think of the chocolate bar palettes from Too Faced & Makeup Revolution, even though they’re completely different xD. The inside of the palette however is a different story. Zoella was probably trying to be cute with the two heart shaped eyeshadow pans. They have a little white squiggly outline so I think she was trying to make them look like heart shaped eggs? I dunno. I think the eyeshadows should have been yellow or orange to properly convey that! Pink yolks are kind of weird.

The Colour story is… boring? Haven’t we seen all those neutral bronze & pink shades before? The pop of blue is interesting, but there’s already a beautiful blue in the Mar Palette so I wouldn’t buy this just for that blue shade. I think she was hoping for syrupy pancake & waffle shades which in theory is nice but in reality translates to boring neutrals.

Will I purchase? Do I really have to ask? I’ll pass, thanks!

Brunch Date Pressed Powder Highlighter & Blush

The pressed powder highlighter & blush in the Brunch Date Collection are the usual 6g sizes offered at ColourPop but they retail for $8USD, which is $1 more than their non-collab pressed powder products.

ColourPop doesn’t have the option listed to purchase just the product pans minus the packaging to put into an empty palette. I don’t feel like I would buy a blush & highlighter from ColourPop just because it’s Zoella. I haven’t so far and these two products aren’t what’s going to nudge me into making a purchase.

The compact design with the hearts doesn’t appeal to me, they look kind of childish to me but whatevs. The blush shade is called Soulmate and is a soft pink to go with the peach highlight shade Swipe Right.

I’m interested to try their pressed powder blushes (I’ve been eyeing Rom Com) but I found the ColourPop pressed powder highlighters in my This Is For You Highlighter palette to be very subtle which isn’t what I like in a highlight. I recently tried out the Dream Sequence Super Shock Highlighter Palette and that formula is much more my speed.

Will I purchase? Unfortunately Not.

Zoella Super Nova Liquid Shadows

I’ve already mentioned this on my blog but in case you guys don’t already know, I dislike ColourPop’s Super Nova Shadows. They’re not my favourite, the glitter is chunky and lifts the eyeshadow under it when I try to wear it as an eyeshadow topper.

The two shades are OG, which is described a “golden champagne sprinkled with silver glitter” and Bellini, a rose gold metallic shade. I don’t know about you guys but I think both shades look incredibly similar in the tubes :S Is it just me? Am I crazy?

You can buy both 4.7g shades in the collection individually for $7USD or in the Group Hug Set for $14. You don’t save any money buying both.

Will I purchase? No, not because it’s Zoella but because I don’t like the formula.

Zoella Brunch Date Creme Gel Liners

Crème Gel Liners

I’ve been wanting to try ColourPop’s crème gel liners for a while so I’m happy that there will be more colours available soon! The Brunch Date Liners aren’t the most colorful of liners though, I was kind of hoping for something more exciting. That being said I really like the look of the chocolate brown liner, Sincerely Yours. The shade XOXO is a charcoal shade and I can’t see myself reaching for it over a black.

Both Crème Gel Liners contain 0.2g of product and retail for $5USD.

Will I purchase? Yes, I think I will actually pick up Sincerely Yours once my no-buy is over.

ColourPop x Zoella Brunch Date Lip Bundles

Brunch Date Lip Bundles

These products will all be sold individually but you can also purchase them as a lip duos. Each set ncludes a matte liquid lipstick & a lippie pencil. Each bundle retails for $11.50USD. I probably wouldn’t reach for either of the pink duos, My Day Ones or What Happens at Brunch. They’re very ordinary looking nude shades that I probably already have in my collection. I really like the look of the Strawberry Red bundle, Give us the Goss. It’s really the only shade that actually makes me think of brunch! Strawberries & whipped cream on your pancakes anyone?

I like ColourPop’s Ultra Matte Lip formula. Some people say it’s too drying but I’ve never had an issue with it. If any of these shades appeal to you I think it’s a good buy.

Will I purchase? Probably not, but I love the look of the red lipstick!

What do you think of the ColourPop X Zoella Bunch Date Collection?

The ColourPop Brunch Date collection doesn’t impress me. The Brunch Date palette is a hard no, I think buying another neutral palette with one pop of colour right now is a waste of money. The Supernova shadows are also not going to be gracing my vanity anytime soon. The blush & highlight are pretty, though not necessary in my current collection. The créme gel liners would make a good addition to what I currently have and if I ever have money again after purchasing our house next month I might pick up the Give us the Goss lip bundle.

I REALLY hope ColourPop starts reading the comments on their release posts and considers collaborating with “smaller” channels with under 1 million followers. There are so many fantastic YouTubers out there that aren’t as widely known and I think many of them would come up with amazing things. JKISSA 2019, please!

Thanks for reading, Talk soon! x

I have seen a lot of her products around the blogosphere but I don’t even know what she looks like. I can’t believe her advent calendar was basically a scam & she still has fans? Wow…

All of the packaging is adorable but, all of the shades are quite boring!! (For everything). I agree the hearts in the palette should’ve been yellow! & those liquid eyeshadows look exactly the same as each other??

I bought one of her Zoella bath fizz bars thinking it must be amazing because it was $8 or something like that… and it was really boring. I’m going back to Lush bath products…
Yeah that advent calendar was a joke, I’m surprised that people still follow her!

YES the liquid shadows are IDENTICAL to my eyes. I don’t understand why this collection had to be so boring…

      Thanks for reading! x

I kind of agree… the colors in the pallette are so overdone!

This palette could have been so much nicer!

I completely agree with everything you’ve said, the only thing I love about this collection is the packaging! I find it really cute and pretty but other than that, I’m not a big fan of these products. I already own similar products and I’m not a big fan of Zoella soo it’s gonna be a pass for me. Loved this post x

Funny enough, while I was reading your post, I was thinking….hmmm…that doesn’t look like ColourPop packaging lol! But you’re def right, it seems they tend to change things up quite a bit! I don’t think I’d be too compelled to buy the palette either. The packaging is cute, but the shades seem a bit bland. Kinda weird since the packaging is so colorful!! Awesome post, Cleia!! x

I think this is extra different from their usual packaging! But it’s hard to tell lol

I wish the shade selection was more interesting. I think it would be great for someone who is just beginning their makeup collection though! Thanks for reading!

I do agree with most of your opinions, if not all of them. I have never really watched Zoella, so I guess that’s the reason that the collection doesn’t interest me. I’m also a bit torn on the packaging. I can’t decide whether it’s cute or childish? The palette is a bit boring and repetitive. I probably have tons of dupes for all of the eyeshadows. The rest of the collection is also just meh to me. I guess we’ll both pass on this collection, haha. Great post!

I think it’s a little bit of both cute & childish 😅 I’m in my twenties but I feel too old for this collab lol
I’d love to see some people put together dupes of each shade, I’m sure this palette is already in my collection 🤔
      Thanks for reading!

The packaging and concept is cute, you don’t see many brunch themed makeup releases! The palette is pretty and would be good for beginners but I can kind of see why she went down this route, neutrals would appeal to the most people and therefore maybe more people will buy it! I would like to try the palette but I also know I have similar shades but if the quality of these shadows is good I’d be tempted to possibly pass my other palettes along… I’m looking forward to seeing reviews of the palette 🙂 The lip shades are more boring than the palette in my opinion and I don’t like matte liquid lipsticks unless it’s more of a satin, velvet, demi-matte finish. I do think this will sell well though.

I totally agree with everything you said here! It’s time for ColourPop to collaborate with a smaller channel. Lord knows they have plenty of releases to go around, sheesh!

I hope they start choosing different people. Or at least rotate larger collabs with smaller ones. I’m sure they’ll sell anyways!

      • March 1, 2019 / 12:35 pm

Speaking of collabs, Jkissa just announced her Elf collab today. Finally!!

Yesss!!! I’m hoped it would be ColourPop but I’m thrilled she’s collabing with anyone right now. I will be picking it up on the 5th (my no-buy is technically done, but I’m keeping spending low in March)

          • March 1, 2019 / 8:04 pm

The collection looks amazing, and I’m so glad it’s so tightly edited and not a million pieces.

Yes me too! And only like $23 or something like that for the PR box which is amazing.

  8. February 27, 2019 / 8:49 pm

Yep, pass for me! I actually have this collection coming up in an anti-haul. I don’t support Zoe, plus nothing in this collection is interesting to me. I know a lot of people think the packaging is cute, but I personally feel like it looks like it’s aimed for kids…just a personal preference though!

I was thinking earlier today that the blush/bronzer compacts really remind me of those toy kitchen sets you’d get as a kid. Where you could pretend you were a chef or something lol. Why ColourPop Whyyyy??

      • February 28, 2019 / 11:44 am

LOL toy kitchen sets, that made me laugh so hard! I couldn’t put my finger on why I felt the packaging looked kiddy, but that’s exactly it!

  9. February 27, 2019 / 8:24 pm

I just think this is several years too late. Zoella isn’t know for her beauty blogging really any more and seems really disconnected from her audience. I think the packaging is cute but it doesn’t really match the products, it’s like they could have ANYTHING on them. The palette is especially disappointing, so many neutrals and one pop of colour? Please.

I think the first video I ever saw from Zoella was a beauty video but she doesn’t really post them all that often, and I don’t think anyone considers her a beauty guru. However ColourPop collabs with actresses and musicians who are’t known for that either so it’s not like Zoella is any less relevant than their past collaborations :S But yeah it’s still strange to me! They could have picked SO many better people!
The products don’t really reflect brunch at all, the packaging is totally brunch but it would have been nice if the names of the products were at least relevant.
The palette is so disappointing. Thanks for reading!

I love the breakdown of this collection! While it’s not something I would personally purchase, because the palette is boring, and I already have loads of blushes and highlighers. The things I might consider is the lip liner and the gel liner. Great post xxx

Thanks Melina! I watched a swatch video of the palette today too and I was just not impressed. The formula seems good, it’s just not an exciting palette. I do like the little lip bundles Zoella put together though!

  11. February 27, 2019 / 3:35 pm

The packaging is cute but I so would have rather them collab with JKissa as you mentioned. I love Jkissa plus she always supports them so I would love to see them do a collection with her. I’m most likely going to pass on this one as well though I might get the supernova shadows as I do enjoy those.

Definitely! I watched her swatch party video with Jordan and she mentioned that colourpop is aware of all the collab requests… I want to know when it will happen!
I hope you like the shadows if you get them!

They did a fantastic job with the packaging. I love the little orange juice/milk container packaging for the lipstick sets!
