Hey everyone, welcome back for my first impressions on the NEW ColourPop Mar Palette! ColourPop’s release of the SOL + MAR palettes broke my no-buy four days in. I’m kicking myself for being so weak, but I also scaled way back on skincare purchases and buying useless stuff this month sooo…. Anyways, the Mar Palette caught me off guard. This collection was featured as the “hottest summer trend”, but I have no idea where this “trend” came from. The colour story is odd to me, but I can’t dispute that the ColourPop Mar palette has some gorgeous shades in it. I will of course have a full review up soon, but for now let’s talk my Mar Palette First Impressions!
ColourPop MAR Palette
You’re so wavy. This teal and bronze 9-pan shadow palette is a colour lover’s dream! Insanely pigmented teals and wearable bronzes make this the perfect vacay palette. Slip this sleek mirrored palette in your luggage and make a splash! — ColourPop
The ColourPop Mar Palette retails for $12USD and contains 9 x 1g shadows for a total of 9g of product. The regular ColourPop 12 pan palettes have 12 x 0.85g shadows for a total of 10.2g of product. The Mar & Sol palettes are technically a better deal as you get your shadows at $1.33/g each while the 12 pan palettes work out to $1.57/g. The packaging is a hard plastic case and includes a mirror.
As I said in the intro, the Colour Story of the ColourPop MAR Palette is very different for me. Mar means Sea, so I guess they were going for an ocean and sand vibe? I still don’t know that I would grab these shades on my own if I was curating a palette. I’m a little bit concerned that I won’t be able to create more than one or two looks with this selection of shades. The the teal/green shadows are gorgeous though, I can see why people are going crazy for this eyeshadow palette.
I feel like the MAR Palette is lacking a purple shade. I think that would have been really pretty and useful to have instead of all those similar bronzey shades that I have in every other ColourPop palette.
Another thing to note is that the ColourPop MAR Palette reminds me of the Alamar Cosmetics Reina Del Caribe Vol. 1 Palette. The green and blue shades remind me a lot of Celia and Veradero from the Alamar Palette. They’re different, but if you already have the Alamar I don’t know that you need the MAR Palette.
I was disappointed by how hard it was to work with this palette when I created my look for this post. The matte shades are ColourPop’s standard on-point formula, but the two most interesting shades in the palette are unfortunately CP’s satin formula that I am not a fan of. I went to apply Gridlock (the center shade) and HWY (the sea foam green) with my brush and got zero colour pay off. I had to use a flat synthetic brush, really press into the pan and spray my brush with setting spray every two minutes while I packed the shades onto my lid. The look at the bottom took double the time that it normally takes me to craft an eye look. The end result was nice but I didn’t like how much effort I needed to put into it!
I think the ColourPop MAR Palette is good but I don’t think I would recommend it to a beginner because the shadows aren’t the easiest to work with. You really need to be comfortable with blending or else your eye look can look muddy and a little crazy.
The ColourPop MAR Palette swatches pretty well, though the sea foam green swatched a little faintly. The metallics are very pigmented as are the mattes. The shimmery satin shades do need some building up when using a brush, but swatched with my finger they pop.
Mar Palette Makeup Look
For this look I used Sorbet, Detour, HWY and Gridlock. I had to build the satins up a lot to make them pop, I have never used so much setting spray on my brush for one look. 😒 The look turned out really beautiful though! I noticed some fading of the shade HWY after 8 hours, not enough to ruin my look but you should be aware that even with setting spray the shades may not last on you all day.
Did you pick up the ColourPop Mar Palette?
Thank you so much for reading! I hope you enjoyed my first impressions of the ColourPop Mar Palette. Let me know which of the two new releases you prefer! I will continue to play with this palette and hopefully have a full review up in a week or two once I have played with all the shades.
