ColorPop MAR Palette | First Impressions

ColourPop MAR Palette First ImpressionsHey everyone, welcome back for my first impressions on the NEW ColourPop Mar Palette! ColourPop’s release of the SOL + MAR palettes broke my no-buy four days in. I’m kicking myself for being so weak, but I also scaled way back on skincare purchases and buying useless stuff this month sooo…. Anyways, the Mar Palette caught me off guard. This collection was featured as the “hottest summer trend”, but I have no idea where this “trend” came from. The colour story is odd to me, but I can’t dispute that the ColourPop Mar palette has some gorgeous shades in it. I will of course have a full review up soon, but for now let’s talk my Mar Palette First Impressions!

ColourPop MAR Pressed Powder Palette Review

ColourPop MAR Palette
First Impressions

You’re so wavy. This teal and bronze 9-pan shadow palette is a colour lover’s dream! Insanely pigmented teals and wearable bronzes make this the perfect vacay palette. Slip this sleek mirrored palette in your luggage and make a splash! — ColourPop

The ColourPop Mar palette retails for $12USD and contains 9 x 1g shadows for a total of 9g of product. The regular ColourPop 12 pan palettes have 12 x 0.85g shadows for a total of 10.2g of product. The Mar & Sol palettes are technically a better deal as you get your shadows at $1.33/g each while the 12 pan palettes work out to $1.57/g. The packaging is a hard plastic case and includes a mirror.

Thoughts

As I said in the intro, the Colour Story of the ColourPop MAR Palette is very different for me. Mar means Sea, so I guess they were going for an ocean and sand vibe? I still don’t know that I would grab these shades on my own if I was curating a palette. I’m a little bit concerned that I won’t be able to create more than one or two looks with this selection of shades. The the teal/green shadows are gorgeous though, I can see why people are going crazy for this eyeshadow palette.

I feel like the MAR Palette is lacking a purple shade. I think that would have been really pretty and useful to have instead of all those similar bronzey shades that I have in every other ColourPop palette.

Another thing to note is that the ColourPop MAR Palette reminds me of the Alamar Cosmetics Reina Del Caribe Vol. 1 Palette. The green and blue shades remind me a lot of Celia and Veradero from the Alamar Palette. They’re different, but if you already have the Alamar I don’t know that you need the MAR Palette.

ColourPop MAR Eyeshadow Palette Review

I was disappointed by how hard it was to work with this palette when I created my look for this post. The matte shades are ColourPop’s standard on-point formula, but the two most interesting shades in the palette are unfortunately CP’s satin formula that I am not a fan of. I went to apply Gridlock (the center shade) and HWY (the sea foam green) with my brush and got zero colour pay off. I had to use a flat synthetic brush, really press into the pan and spray my brush with setting spray every two minutes while I packed the shades onto my lid. The look at the bottom took double the time that it normally takes me to craft an eye look. The end result was nice but I didn’t like how much effort I needed to put into it!

I think the ColourPop MAR Palette is good but I don’t think I would recommend it to a beginner because the shadows aren’t the easiest to work with. You really need to be comfortable with blending or else your eye look can look muddy and a little crazy.

ColourPop MAR Palette Swatches

Swatches

The ColourPop MAR Palette swatches pretty well, though the sea foam green swatched a little faintly. The metallics are very pigmented as are the mattes. The shimmery satin shades do need some building up when using a brush, but swatched with my finger they pop.

For this look I used SorbetDetourHWY and Gridlock. I had to build the satins up a lot to make them pop, I have never used so much setting spray on my brush for one look. 😒 The look turned out really beautiful though! I noticed some fading of the shade HWY after 8 hours, not enough to ruin my look but you should be aware that even with setting spray the shades may not last on you all day.

Technically I cheated a bit by checking out your opinions on the Instagram post you put up, but I’m glad you made this look work! I know you’ve come to the conclusion that you’ve got a bad batch, which sucks. I actually originally wanted the Mar palette, but I think you’re right, while those three blue/teal shades are beautiful, I don’t think I want more bronze-y colors. I think my Jaclyn Hill Morphe Palette has a good amount of those shades, and so I’ll keep my eyes out for something extremely different (like the norvina palette!) xxx

You always have next month to try and make up for your no-buy, right?! 😆

It’s funny that you said this palette reminds you of the Alamar palette, because when this was first released, I thought “wait. Didn’t I just see a palette like this from another brand recently”? I feel like it’s this summer’s trend to throw in a blue shade or two into a palette.

So sad this didn’t work out for you though! 🙁

ahaha that’s true. I think my no buy is a lost cause at this point!

yeah the blues are really pretty but when every brand does it you really don’t need every palette!

Me too, I wanted to love this sooo bad, I’ve been playing with it just about every day to try to make it work but at this point I don’t think it’s going to happen 🙁

I actually love the color story, but I’m sure thats just a personal preference! Your the first person I’ve seen give it a negative review, but I’m hoping maybe you got a bad one? I hope not all of them are bad because I really really want this palette!

I’m feeling like I got a bad batch, because everyone else seems to love it :S I’m going to keep playing with it and hopefully post an updated review soon!
The colour story really is just preference, I think I will enjoy it a lot more using both the Mar & Sol palettes together so I have a little bit more variety. If you want the palette I say go for it, chances are I just got an off one!

Also I don’t think it’s a bad palette, it’s just harder for me to work with than I expected 😅

Hmmmm this palette is currently on its way to me. I’m really hoping that I can make it work. Maybe you absolutely need to use a concealer before laying down the satins and use your finger to press it on? I never try any other method these days because that always works the best for me. I actually love the idea of blues with bronzes so this palette has me really excited.

I hope you love it! I’ve been talking with a lot of other bloggers on Instagram and the concensus is that I must have gotten a bad batch or something like that, because literally every other review I’ve read has been overwhelmingly positive. I will need to try the concealer method, or maybe not setting my eye primer so the shades have something more to grip to 🤔 Let me know how it is for you!

Definitely reminds me of the Alamar palette. A shame the formulas aren’t that great, which is surprising for ColourPop. Looks great on you though!

A lot of people have suggested to me that I may have received a bad batch of the palette because most people don’t seem to have any issues with the formula, so it might just be a fluke that the formula isn’t as great in my palette. But yes, very similar blues to the alamar palette! Thanks! 😊

  6. July 23, 2018 / 12:06 am

The look you created is beautiful, blue/teal eyeshadows you don’t see in palettes very often! Sorry to hear the formula wasn’t so great on a few shades. Was the formula the same as the SOL palette?

Thanks Chanelle! Many people have suggested that I may have got a bad batch on the palette because it seems most reviewers haven’t had any issues with the formula. I didn’t have nearly as much trouble with the sol palette, though I still needed a bit of setting spray on the satin shades.

      • July 23, 2018 / 10:22 pm

Not for you personally but I guess in some ways it’s a relief that not all palettes have that formula if it isn’t as good as usual Colourpop standards. Maybe contact them?

I will probably let it go, I already had to contact them to refund my Dream St. Palette because it arrived broken, I doubt they would be thrilled with me asking for a replacement of the Mar palette now. I will try to find a way to make it work better for me!

What a bummer that some of the shades are difficult to work with. I was considering getting it but you’re right, I already have similar shades in the Alamar palette. The look you came up with is beautiful! 😻

I was really surprised, every review I watched of this palette was positive. No one mentioned the fading I noticed or that the satins are annoying to work with =/
The green look I created here looks almost identical to the one I created for my Alamar Review with the shade Celia! Thanks Ash! 🙂

interested that it doesn’t last all day! that teal shade looks really amazing on you though!

I was surprised about the fading, I used a lot of setting spray plus a primer so that should have locked the shades in :S
      Thank you! 🙂

I love the blue shades in this palette, but there seems to be only blue & brown shades so I agree with you that it could use another color!
Your look is gorgeous but it’s a shame it took so long to pack on the shades!

The green and blues are unique but the browns get kind of boring, there are so many of them! I think I would be more annoyed at this palette if it wasn’t so darn cheap, it’s still pretty good for $12!
