ColourPop Birthday Collection | Break It Down

Hey beauties! It’s time for another collection break down. Today we’re talking about the ColourPop Birthday Collection. ColourPop usually releases a new Super Shock Shadow for their birthday month but I wasn’t expecting a whole collection, especially after they just released a new collection with Shayla.

The birthday collection… isn’t what I expected. I posted an insta story poll asking if you guys wanted a review of the Main Squeeze palette and the majority of my followers said NO. Message received, I wasn’t sure that I was feeling the collection either! I still wanted to talk about it in some way, so I decided to write a collection break down.

Break It Down: ColourPop Birthday Collection 2019

ColourPop’s birthday collection celebrates their 5th birthday as a company. It released on May 16th 2019. It’s crazy how quickly ColourPop has grown, they’ve surpassed 7 million followers on instagram! They never seem to slow down, they’re constantly releasing new products. Case & Point: A full collection for their birthday. Unfortunately this collection really missed the mark for me, which is incredibly disappointing after how much I loved their Spring Collection.

ColourPop Main Squeeze Palette

Main Squeeze Shadow Palette

Ummm why is the Main Squeeze Palette marketed as a Watermelon palette? It’s more fitting as a Strawberry palette, because none of these shades remind me of watermelon. A watermelon palette should have had at least one green for watermelon rind and a black for the watermelon seeds. I would have actually gone for a palette like that, but instead we have this collection of strawberry reds and pink.

think that this is ColourPop’s response to all the Watermelon products all over instagram right now. Ulta just released a new watermelon facial spray (which I’m dying to try) and Glow Recipe has been killing it with their watermelon theme. The Main Squeeze palette misses the mark for me.

Anyways, there have been people asking for a red palette to fit in with ColourPop’s monochromatic themed palettes so I guess it fits. Personally red shadows don’t really work for me, I look sick when I have red on my eyes so I’ll be passing on the Main Squeeze Palette.

Birthday Treat Super Shock Shadow

Any purchase during ColourPop’s birthday celebration qualifies for a free super shock birthday shadow. Just looking at this shade it reminds me of Tea Party which is a shade I already have. I actually love Tea Party so I can see the appeal of this shade if you don’t already have a peachy glitter Super Shock Shadow.

I won’t be making a purchase at ColourPop anytime soon (at least I’m not planning on it) so I won’t be picking this up.

Big Slice So Juicy Plumping Gloss

I haven’t tried the So Juicy glosses yet. They kind of remind me of the CO Bigelow glosses that were sold at Bath & Body Works a while ago. I actually liked those a lot and I’m curious to how those compare, but I wouldn’t place an order just for a lip gloss.

The shade looks nice, but I’m not excited about it if I’m being honest.

New Gliterally Obsessed Shades

These new shades of Gliterally Obsessed are pretty but I’m honestly not one for glitter so I won’t be picking them up. From left to right we have Trippin On Skies and Bring The Heat. Each of these are available individually and ColourPop also released the Star Gazing Mini Trio containing 3 shades that were already available. There are also a few sets of Super Nova Shadows that came with with other shades of Gliterally Obsessed.

They’re not for me, but if you love them you do you!

New Super Nova Shadow Shades

I was kind of confused about the Birthday Collection because it contains a lot of different sets which contain products you can’t buy individually. Normally ColourPop will sell vault sets containing all the products in a collection but they generally make every product available without buying a set.

There are three new Super Nova Shadows. From Left to Right they are Ice PopSand Castle, and Hazy. The pink looks beautiful but I don’t like the Super Nova Shadow Formula so it’s a no-brainer for me, I won’t be picking these up.

ColourPop Birthday Collection | Melonade Ultra Matte Lip

Ultra Matte & Ultra Glossy Lips

ColourPop did the same thing with their lipsticks… they released sets of products you can’t buy individually. WTF is all I have to say about that. There is one lipstick you can buy on its own and that’s Melonade, a strawberry red.

Next we have three different lip sets, each containing an Ultra Matte Lip & an Ultra Glossy Lip. The first set is the Sweet Crush Set which contains a pinky-red called Sherbet Shop and a sheer, almost purple gloss called Granita.

Next is the Slice Of Life Set which has a peachy gloss called Fresco and a soft pink called Swing Away.

The last set is the Out Of Your Rind Set which contains a hot pink lipstick (On the Grill) and a sheer pink gloss (Scorcher).

I love ColourPop’s Ultra Matte Lip formula as well as their lip glosses but I would rather purchase them separately to choose the shades that I really want instead of getting a set.

Best Served Chilled Set

Last but not least in the 2019 ColourPop Birthday collection is the Best Served Chilled Set which contains a Fourth Ray Beauty Watermelon Face Milk, Watermelon Seed Oil, and a Watermelon Lippie Scrub. The only product you can’t buy individually is the Lippie Scrub.

ColourPop’s Lippie Scrubs are awesome, I have Razzle Dazzle and it tastes amazing. I can only imagine how good the Watermelon Lippie Scrub would taste but I don’t want to buy a full set just for the scrub. I don’t know what’s going on with their Lippie Balms & Lippie Scrubs. They released a full range of different colours/flavours and now there are only a few left on the website.

The Watermelon Face Milk & Oil are supposed to be great for balancing the skin. I already have the watermelon seed oil and am in the process of testing it out. If you’re interested in trying Fourth Ray Beauty & ColourPop’s lip scrub then this might be a good set for you, but I think there are better sets out there, especially if you order directly from Fourth Ray’s website.

What do you think of ColourPop’s 2019 Birthday Collection?

I’m rather put off by all the products that I can’t buy individually. Maybe they’ll release more individually after the initial craze wears off but I’m just not all that interested. By the time that happens I’m sure ColourPop will have released 6 new collections…

I also think that this should be considered a Strawberry collection, I don’t really see watermelon in any of these products. There was a lot of potential in the idea but it fell flat for me. What do you guys think? Thanks for reading, talk soon!

Cleia, your idea of a true watermelon eyeshadow palette would be perfect. I’d love those colors! But I agree, this one is more strawberryish. There’s nothing really standing out to me in this collection, either! & that seems a bit shady how nothing is really sold separately.

A real watermelon palette would make my dreams come true! But they just released a Blue eyeshadow palette that I’m really liking the look of, I think I’ll be picking it up.

I don’t know why this collection seems so generic, but it wasn’t all that exciting to me :S

Ooo, can’t wait to read your thoughts & review on the new blue palette. I bet you’re gonna create some beautiful looks with it!

        • June 2, 2019 / 3:31 pm

I hope to order it soon! It reminds me of Blue Yoshi from Mario!

        • June 3, 2019 / 3:55 pm

I ordered it yesterday!! I can’t wait to share it 💜

  2. May 24, 2019 / 8:55 am

Uhm what? Lol none of that reminded me of watermelon I have to agree it’s more of a strawberry theme. Lol. What the hell is their problem releasing so many things at once? 🤣 I mean great for them but come on, it’s a lot. Too much. Lol.
Anyway this collection doesnt appeal to me in the slightest. I’m disappointed that this was their birthday collection. You’d think they would come up with something better or more flashy.

    • May 29, 2019 / 8:56 pm

RIGHT!? Where are they getting watermelon from!? I get that they wanted to collab with Fourth Ray Beauty for their new watermelon face milk but still…

Now there’s a blue palette (which I want) and today they released cream blush sticks! I can’t keep up! I need a break from all these releases…

      • May 30, 2019 / 9:05 am

Omg I literally just saw their blue moon palette yesterday and I was like *gasp* ” I want!!” But i do have the JSC blue blood. I will have to compare swatches and see if the shades are different or the same lol.

        • June 2, 2019 / 3:37 pm

Oh right, they’re probably a little similar. But the ColourPop one is so gorgeous!!

          • June 4, 2019 / 7:07 am

            I agree! Super duper gorgeous!

    • May 22, 2019 / 8:30 pm

I’m glad that red tones look good on you guys! Red is such a tricky shade to wear, it either works or it doesn’t. Hopefully you love the palette x

You know I love red, so this collection is right up my alley! ❤️ But I definitely understand all your points, especially on some of the items not being sold individually and it not being Strawberry themed! Great post as always 💕

    • May 20, 2019 / 3:04 pm

You’d probably love it then! I just wish there was a little more “watermelon” in all the red shades haha. Thanks for reading!

        I agree! 😊

  4. May 18, 2019 / 11:02 pm

I think we already talked about this, but I’m not interested in this collection either. I think an actual watermelon-themed palette would have been a little more interesting, but still probably would not have changed my mind about it. Reds just look bad on me.

None of the other products (Glitterally Obsessed shadows, Supernova Shadows, matte lipsticks, So Juicy lip glosses) interest me either! It’s rare that that happens lol, usually at least one thing in their collections jump out at me. Oh well, guess my wallet is happy!

    • May 20, 2019 / 3:06 pm

I probably would have gone for a watermelon palette! They’re all about these monochromatic palettes these days so I can see why they did all red. But yeah me and red eyeshadow don’t mix well either!

I guess it’s nice to be able to just pass on a collection! And I’m sure they’ll have new releases in a week or two lol Thanks for reading!

  5. May 18, 2019 / 1:20 pm

It’s really interesting that we have a completely different perspective about this collection! I can relate when you’re saying it’s more of a strawberry than a watermelon collection. But I think they chose watermelon instead because they already have watermelon seed oil on Fourth Ray Beauty and they wanted to make a collab with their own sister anyway so they tried to match it with the theme (this is just my guess, tho!). I also wrote about this collection in my blog https://unprettyvanity.com/2019/05/19/colourpop-2019-birthday-collection-buy-or-bye/ . I’d be happy if you want to check it out also! 🙂

    • May 20, 2019 / 3:08 pm

I read your post, you’re very thorough! I’m glad the collection appealed to you, I think that if reds looked better on me I would have been more excited.

I can understand why they went watermelon with FRB but the products still don’t seem to quite fit. I wish they had put a little bit more effort into the colors :S

      The packaging is cute though!

      • May 23, 2019 / 2:52 am

Totally relatable! I think it’s the same with me on green palette. That green palette CP has looks so pretty and many people seems liking it, but I don’t wear green that much, so I haven’t planned to pick it up until now ><

I completely understand your rant about the color selection. For those who wish to see a true watermelon palette, this might be quite disappointing 🙁

CP indeed always has the cutest packaging!

        • May 24, 2019 / 12:09 am

I had mixed thoughts on the green palette. I loved the olive shades but the mint green shades really don’t go with the olives! So it’s a little strange to work with :S

Did you see the blue moon palette that released today!? omg I’m obsessed, I must have it!

          • May 24, 2019 / 12:14 am

It’s actually really appealing to me, too!! I love blue shadows, but at the moment I don’t have any other thing to pick up that could sum up to 50usd to get the free shipping 😅 I think I might pick it up when they have free global shipping without minimum purchase 🤔 what about you?

          • May 24, 2019 / 12:51 pm

That’s my problem too! I’m waiting until the 30% off sale is over so that I can add a coupon code to at least reduce shipping a bit.

  6. May 17, 2019 / 9:21 pm

It’s nice there’s a red palette to go with their other monochromatic ones but I don’t like red on my eyes either. I can see how this collection lends itself to watermelons but now you mention strawberries I can see that too!

    • May 20, 2019 / 3:16 pm

I think lots of people will love the palette but yeah reds look awful on me! Hard pass lol

I was one of the “no” votes because I felt like this collection was just…boring. I know it’s getting hard to come up with original ideas because of how saturated the industry is, but I thought they would do something a bit more WOW for their birthday!

    • May 20, 2019 / 3:32 pm

I agree… I’m happy I didn’t buy anything from it. Yeah it does seem like a bit of an odd birthday collection!

  8. May 17, 2019 / 1:57 pm

I saw this on another blog post and it looks really nice, but I think you are right it is more on the strawberry side than watermelon. Almost seems like they may have rushed this a bit…maybe.

    • May 20, 2019 / 3:33 pm

I wish they had put a bit more thought into making the products fit the theme. It feels like they just slapped something together :S

      • May 20, 2019 / 3:37 pm

Yeah I agree. They definitely should’ve put a little more thought
