ColourPop Blue Moon Palette Review + 3 Looks

You guys didn’t think I was going to skip over the new Blue Moon palette from ColourPop did you!? I wasn’t feeling their birthday collection but as soon as I saw the new Blue Moon Palette on Trendmood I knew I had to have it… eventually. I didn’t order it right away because I didn’t want to spend $50 for free shipping when the palette was released. ColourPop disabled promo codes so I had to wait until after the 30% off sale to use a coupon to offset the cost of international shipping.

Before we jump into the review I wanted to share some news with you guys. I am now a ColourPop affiliate! I’ve been reviewing ColourPop for over two years and they quickly became one of my favourite makeup brands after my first haul. My links to ColourPop products are now affiliated, so if you shop using my links and ColourPop banners on my home page you’ll be supporting my blog. I am still committed to being 100% honest in my reviews and will always tell you when I like something, don’t like it, etc. Let’s talk about the Blue Moon Palette!

ColourPop Blue Moon Palette Review

ColourPop Blue Moon Palette Review

Meet the latest palette to take the scene, Blue Moon. With 5 matte shadows and 4 metallics in every shade of blue under the sun! Make a splash this summer with an all-out blue look, or wear it as a pop of colour – she is versatile, baby!

The ColourPop Blue Moon Palette retails for $12USD and contains 9 x 1g eyeshadows in a blue variety of matte & metallic finishes. A lot of you told me that an all blue palette was intimidating and I hear you — But I also couldn’t resist! Blue Moon reminds me of my favourite Super Mario Yoshi. Blue Yoshi was a badass and could fly when he got a turtle shell in his mouth. The palette may be called “Blue Moon” but it makes me think “Blue Yoshi”!

Packaging

I love the crescent moon on the blue cardboard packaging! The same moon is on the outside of the palette itself and the back of the palette has all of the shade names. I love that the shade names are also printed under each eyeshadow pan.

The blue moon palette is made of plastic and contains a mirror. I wish that CP had stuck with cardboard packaging instead of creating more plastic that will eventually end up in a landfill. Their cardboard palettes also provide better cushioning than they plastic ones. I’ve dropped my cardboard palettes before and had no problems but I’ve had many eyeshadows break from a small tumble of the plastic palettes.

ColourPop Blue Moon Palette Review

Colour Story

The CP Blue Moon Palette obviously contains all blue shades. It follows their monochromatic palette trend. So far there is a Green, Red, Pink, Purple, and now Blue palette. I’m not sure if they count the Sol & Mar palettes as monochromatic anymore because they both contain some bronze/brown neutral shades. Now that they have a real monochromatic blue palette MAR definitely doesn’t fit the trend!

These blue eyeshadows are stunning! I love that they have a periwinkle, cobalt and a royal blue. The only blue they might have been missing is a turquoise which can be found in the MAR palette. You have everything you need for a fun pop of colour on the lower lash line or an all blue cut crease, halo eye or whatever else you fancy. There’s even a beautiful blue highlight shade!

The shades that I can dupe from other palettes are Da Ba Dee, which is similar to Aquarius from the Zodiac Palette and Fine China which is similar to Detour from the Mar Palette.

Performance

I loved 2/3 of the ColourPop Blue Moon Palette. Three shades in particular gave me a lot of trouble and I was a little confused by how different the formulas of the matte shades are. I don’t regret my purchase but if you’re considering picking up Blue Moon there are some things that you should know:

Pigmentation

Most of these shades are very pigmented. I don’t have a ton of experience working with blue shadows but I’ve heard that blues can be very hard to work with. All the shades swatch beautifully and most of them are high performing.

Moonlight and Starry Eyed are very soft in the pan and remind me of the mattes from Anastasia Beverly Hills. You only need the lightest tap of your brush to pick them up.

I had problems building up DabaDee and Fine China. DaBaDee is patchy and every time I tried to use it I ended up scrapping my eye look altogether. Fine China is drier and more firmly pressed than the lighter blue shades in the Blue Moon Palette.

Billie Jeansucks. I can work with it if I use my finger or apply it over concealer but with a brush it doesn’t completely stick to my eye. Nor does it smooth across the lid easily like most of CP’s metallic shades from other palettes.

Fallout

I didn’t experience a lot of fallout from the mattes, even the more pigmented ones like Moonlight and Starry Eyed. The shimmers and metallic shades are a completely different story. I get so much fallout from the metallic shades in this palette it’s not even funny.

Billie Jean… Fallout. Tide Pool… Fallout. Mad About U… You get the picture.

You absolutely NEED to do your eyeshadow first when you use the Blue Moon Palette. You’ll also need to use a makeup wipe to remove fallout from under your eyes. Any concealer you might have applied under your eyes beforehand will be ruined. Just something to keep in mind!

Blend

I was satisfied with the performance of the shades Moonlight, Starry Eyed, Lumi, Tide Pool, and Clued In. As were all the YouTubers out there who only used these shades and raved about the palette.

Unfortunately I can’t say the same for Dabadee, and Fine China. I much prefer Aquarius from Zodiac as a periwinkle alternative to Dabadee. Even though Aquarius had it’s own problems at least it’s not patchy and it will blend out. I could not for the life of me make Dabadee work! It does. Not. blend. I placed it all over my eyelid and tried to blend the edges to a softer finish and nothing worked. None of my brushes worked. I hate this shade.

It’s strange to me that some mattes in the Blue Moon Palette are extra smooth and soft and then you have drier, hard-pressed shades. Overall I was able to achieve a decent blend from every shade except for Dabadee.

ColourPop Blue Moon Swatches

Blue Moon Palette Swatches

As you can see from the swatches a few of the shades in the palette are similar to each other. Moonlight and Starry Eyed are essentially the same color, Moonlight is just a shade lighter. I also found Tide Pool and Fine China to be similar but not exact. How many shades of blue can there be in a palette anyways?

Blue Moon Makeup Looks

Look #1: Do you want to build a snowman?

This look made me feel like Elsa, especially with my braid! I am unashamed to admit that Frozen is one of my favourite movies. I watch it whenever I get sick enough to stay home from work and it fills me with happiness.

This look uses all the shades that I loved in the palette. Moonlight & Starry Eyed are my crease shades with Clued In in the outer V. On my lid are the shades Tide Pool and Moonlight with Lumi as an inner corner highlight.

I experienced a bit of fading after 6 hours of wear. Not a lot of fading and the colours were mostly still there but I could see some bare skin peeking through.

Look #2: Conceal, Don’t Feel

Is every look going to be named something that references Frozen? Why yes it is, thank you so much for asking. And what better name for a blue, frosty cut crease amirite?

I felt so fancy wearing this eye look even though it’s something that I would NEVER in a million years leave the house in. I got enough weird looks when the Skip the Dishes guy delivered my food last week.

This look uses Starry Eyed and Clued In in my crease with Billie Jean all over the lid. My outer V is comprised of Fine China and more Clued In. Of course I had to highlight once again with Lumi!

I also popped on some of the Blue Ya Mind BFF Mascara for this look!

Look #3: For The First Time In Forever

And herein lies my main concern with the ColourPop Blue Moon palette: This palette has No Neutral Shades to make a daytime look. A lot of people told me on instagram that they were excited to read my review but wouldn’t be picking up Blue Moon themselves because these shades are too bold for everyday. Blues like these just aren’t wearable for the workplace.

The Only real daytime look that I could come up with that I would actually wear to work was a simple pop of blue on the lower lash line, and honestly you don’t need to buy an all blue palette to do that! All you need is a single shadow.

The Blue Moon Palette is gorgeous BUT irrelevant to most people except for makeup collectors and enthusiasts. Your average, everyday makeup wearing girl/boy probably doesn’t need it.

Pros:

  • Good Pigmentation
  • A strong collection of blue shades
  • Inexpensive
  • Contains a mirror

Cons:

  • Not the most “wearable” palette
  • Lots of Fallout
  • Dabadee & Billie Jean are hard to work with

Did you pick up the ColourPop Blue Moon Palette?

This is super late, but congrats on becoming an affiliate! I think I have you to thank for making me a Colourpop convert, to be honest, and I’m going to try to purchase through your affiliate links from now on (sorry I didn’t read this until today!). As always, beautiful photos and thank you for the honest review. I’m terrible with eye shadow and can never tell if it’s me or the product when I try them myself, so it’s really helpful to hear about it from someone who actually knows how to use stuff properly. 🙂

Thank you so much!! It’s nice to be able to monetize a little bit for work I was already doing, I’m happy to partner with a brand I love so much 😊 That means so much that you would consider purchasing through my links!

Sometimes it’s hard to tell, especially since products can work so different from person to person depending on skin type. At least with ColourPop the products aren’t a huge risk when a palette is only $12! Thank you so much for reading 😊

These colors always look so beautiful on you! Congrats again on being a colourpop affiliate! You totally deserve it. You create amazing reviews, and I completely trust your opinion. I’m sorry to hear that there were a few shades that were a bit troublesome. I don’t really think blues work on me too well, and so I rarely use it, and so this isn’t a palette for me, but it’s an overall beautiful palette. Great review xx

Thank you! I’ve been reaching out to see if they would also consider me for their media list but so far I haven’t gotten a response. But the affiliate program is something for sure!

This is definitely something that I bought more to review than for actual personal use, I don’t blame you for skipping it! The blues are pretty but they sure are bold x

      • July 12, 2019 / 6:40 pm

Fingers crossed you get on their PR list! You deserve it! If I want to buy anything, I’ll ask you for your affiliate link 🙂 x

I was so looking forward to reading this post — yay!! Your makeup looks are all gorgeous and my fave is look #2! Definite Frozen vibes. You also look like a real life version of Cinderella in these pics, girl!!

Aesthetically speaking, this is my favorite palette from ColourPop. I’ve always loved moon and stars, so I gravitated to it immediately. The design is so pretty 💙I’m really bummed to hear that the packaging is made of plastic though :/ I love their cardboard palettes — they’re so much better for the environment and easier to carry, honestly!

Ugh, I really want to buy this palette just because it’s so pretty. Too bad that there was fallout with some of the shades. Plus, I don’t think I’d ever be brave enough to wear these shades to work lol! Hopefully ColourPop will release single shades? I’d definitely pick up one or two! x

  4. June 28, 2019 / 9:57 am

Damn Cleia! You work fast, I feel like this palette just came out and you’re already reviewing it lol.
Anyway congrats on becoming an affiliate for CP! That’s super cool!
Ok. First con, I’m disappointed that they changed their cardboard to plastic. No, no, no, no, no! Hopefully they change it back to cardboard. Because I do agree, anything in plastic packaging is more prone to breaking.
*sigh* I was really hoping that this palette was like really really good but it sounds you had a lot of difficulty with some shades, especially the metallics. It’s TRUE that blue shades are hard to work with and/or make. I mean, remember the Boxycharm x PUR palette? The blue shade was disappointing. all the palettes I own that have blue shades feel very chalky (still need to try the JSC) but anyway, swatches are beautiful but I do see a slightly similarity to the others.
Loving the second makeup look by the way! Super gorgeous!
I would agree that these colorful palettes are more for makeup enthusiasts and not for those who like neutral shades in their palettes. So yeah I would count that as a con as well because most people wouldn’t reach for this palette unless they like bold colors.
This palette seems kind of…50/50 for me, glad I didnt decide to pick it up since i already have the JSC palette. Lol.
    Great review!

You have somehow managed to make the blue eyeshadows look really wearable on you even for daytime! I think they suit you to the tee. The only problem with a palette like this though is the amount of looks you can get from this.

    • June 27, 2019 / 12:59 pm

Thank you! Yeah it’s definitely a challenge getting more than three looks with this palette, and they all look a bit similar because of the shade range. I love the idea of these monochromatic palettes but they’re limiting in a way..

  6. June 27, 2019 / 2:30 am

I liked the look of this palette when it was announced but I’m unsure whether or not to pick it up, I like the hues the brand used in this palette but it sounds like it would be great if the standout shades were available individually too. The blue goes so well with your blonde hair and you do look like Elsa, I’m yet to watch Frozen haha 😛 Look 2 and Look 3 are my favourites 💙

    • June 27, 2019 / 2:53 am

I’m happy I picked it up but it’s really not the most wearable palette out there. I think you’re probably better off picking up a few singles, I know CP doesn’t have all these shades available as singles but they do have some blues! I was super happy to be able to fulfill my Frozen dreams haha, you have to watch the movie! Thanks for reading! 🙂

      • June 27, 2019 / 2:57 am

I’m yet to experiment with the blue from Zoella’s Brunch Date palette 😂 I do plan to watch Frozen one day!

        • June 27, 2019 / 12:57 pm

oh right! I forgot there was a blue in there, you could definitely do a pop of blue on the lower lash line with that shade!

          • June 27, 2019 / 4:14 pm

I do want to try that type of look! What do you wear on the lids when you do a pop on the lower lash line like that?

          • June 27, 2019 / 10:14 pm

Normally just something neutral! I used the Pixi natural beauty palette for a couple crease shades and a champagne shimmer on the lid 🙂

  7. June 26, 2019 / 9:52 pm

Fab review as always! I feel you can pull off these colors so well with your coloring and your new blond hair 😊.

That’s sooo disappointing about Da Be Dee! That’s like my favorite shade in the palette, and the one I’d want as a single if I could get it. I love a pop of blue on the lower lash line, especially in the summer!

    • June 27, 2019 / 2:55 am

Thank you so much! 🙂 I’m so happy with most of the shades in here!

I wish that Dabadee was better! But if you want a similar shade in a single I recommend Aquarius from Zodiac, all the shades were just released as singles! Aquarius is seriously so similar but it’s easier to work with. Thanks for reading!

      • June 27, 2019 / 7:39 am

Oh, I definitely will need to check that out then – thanks!

  8. June 26, 2019 / 12:39 pm

These all look very pretty! I’m a little sad though about The fallout, since I have been looking for some blue shades (that absolutely should not have fallout) 😢

    • June 26, 2019 / 2:29 pm

This palette is definitely not for you if you don’t want fallout! The mattes are alright but anything with shimmer gets everywhere 🙁

      • June 26, 2019 / 3:17 pm

I’m so sad to hear that!😞 I have been wanting to do some fishy/mermaidy looks so to speak and blue is a must have! But I’ll just keep on looking 😉 thank you so much for sharing though!

        • June 27, 2019 / 2:56 am

I hope you find the perfect blue shades that you’re looking for!

  9. June 26, 2019 / 9:14 am

Great review! Sorry there was so much fallout with the metallic shades though, I hate that! I find fallout so messy to clean up, even when you haven’t already applied concealer on underneath.

It’s such a pet peeve when brands include shades that look SO SIMILAR to each other in a palette. Like you only need to come up with 9 shades of blue, it shouldn’t be that hard! They could have put in an electric blue, or a matte greyish-blue to go with Billie Jean.

I’m one of those people who wouldn’t pick up this palette due to the colour story, but it’s fun to see the looks people are doing with this palette either way. The looks totally remind me of Elsa, lol! That periwinkle shade you used in the third look is stunning.

    • June 26, 2019 / 2:28 pm

I hate needing to pull out my makeup wipes to clean up fallout, there’s no easy way to just brush it off. Especially with shades this blue!

I didn’t even think of that, I was so overwhelmed by all the blue that I was blanking on what other shades there are haha! An electric or greyish blue would have been a nice addition!

I don’t have the confidence to wear the first two looks anywhere but my house! I don’t regret buying the palette but I’m sure I won’t be using it as much as other palettes.
