ColourPop Chasing Rainbows Palette Review, Swatches + 3 Looks

Oh ColourPop, you and your constant releases. The ColourPop Chasing Rainbows Palette was released as part of their 2018 Holiday collection and I wasn’t really feeling it for the Holidays. I wasn’t planning on adding it to my collection but this palette was included for free in a recent haul. Who says no to a free eyeshadow palette amirite!?

My blogger friend Polished & Inspired also got this palette around the same time as me so we planned to review the palette on the same day. For another perspective on the Chasing Rainbows palette you should check out her review! Here goes my Chasing Rainbows Palette Review…

ColourPop Chasing Rainbows Holiday Collection

ColourPop Chasing Rainbows Packaging

Packaging

The Chasing Rainbows Palette is packaged with ColourPop’s usual cardboard style palette and has a magnetic closure. This palette doesn’t contain a mirror. Nothing about this palette feels like the Holidays to me which I guess is okay because I won’t be using this just at Christmas-time.

The whole 2018 Holiday Collection was ethereal and dreamy. It didn’t appeal to me as much as other collections but I can see why people would like the packaging. It’s a pretty palette and the bright colours are fun and out of the ordinary. The Dream Sequence Super Shock Highlighter Palette has the same style of packaging.

Colour Story

Speaking of colours, the colour story of the ColourPop Chasing Rainbows Palette is colourful AF. I believe I equated it to “unicorn Barf” in my last ColourPop Haul!

ColourPop has this weird habit of naming colours in ways that don’t convey the correct shade. For example, something ColourPop would do is name a shade “Leprechaun”. Your mind immediately thinks green but the shadow is like “No honey I’m a bright living coral!” The Chasing Rainbows palette is surprisingly well named considering this.

I love that there are a ton of matte shades. This palette is much more useable than the all shimmer Semi-Precious Palette that came out for the 2017 Holiday Season. The ratio of mattes to metallic shades is 3:1 which is awesome.

Although this colour arrangement seems very different from ColourPop’s other palettes I don’t think the shades are all that unique… Not Playing & On One are similar to Skydancer Princess Sparkle from the My Little Pony Palette. Manifest It reminds me of Opalescent from the Element of Surprise Palette and the She palette contains similar peach & pink mattes. I’m not saying that these shades aren’t nice, or even that they’re exact dupes. But you can probably get similar looks using other ColourPop Palettes.

Chasing Rainbows Eyeshadow Palette Review

Pigmentation, Fallout & Blend

TColourPop Chasing Rainbows Palette is really, really pigmented. I love the mattes in this palette especially. They all blend out and together perfectly. The shimmers are the same ColourPop formula that I know & love, with the exception of the yellow shade So Meta. So Meta didn’t apply well over my dry eyelids but it was fine over concealer so it’s not a deal-breaker.

Fallout happens sometimes depending on what shade you’re working with. The more pigmented or sparkly the shade the more fallout you get.  The Chasing Rainbows palette is such a relief after working with the Morphe 35M Boss Mood Artistry palette. I’m so sick of that formula! The Chasing Rainbows Palette has got Boss Mood beat in terms of formula, hands down.

ColourPop Chasing Rainbows Palette Swatches

Top to Bottom: Wiggles, Blurred Lines, So Meta, Feeling It, Realness, Woke, Wishlist, Manifest It, Keep Cool, Not Playing, Lucid, Bring It, On One, Eclipse, Prism

Chasing Rainbows Palette Swatches

Wiggles: This peachy nude matte is great for setting my eye primer.
Blurred Lines: I really don’t know what to make of this shade. It’s an opal with gold glitter. It’s interesting but I have a hard time combining it with the rest of the palette.
So Meta: So Meta is described as a “Metallic Marigold” and I would have to agree. I used it in Look #2.
Feeling It: I really wanted this shade to be called “Feel it Still” after the song… This is one of the more wearable matte shades in the palette.
Realness: This brown matte adds wearablility to the palette.

Woke: A beautiful matte salmon pink. Jkissa posted a look using this shade and I am obsessed.
Wish List: A matte vibrant coral. I have similar shades in my collection already but it goes nicely with Woke.
Manifest It: This is one of those matte shades with unnecessary glitter flecks that disappear when you tap out your brush. It’s pretty in the palette, invisible on the eyes. The pink itself is electric though.
Keep Cool: I personally like the Sagittarius purple from the Zodiac Palette more, but it’s not a bad purple.
Not Playing: TOTAL My Little Pony Vibes. It reminds me of the Purple Holiday Glam look that I did last month with the MLP palette.

Swatches of the Chasing Rainbows Palette

Top to Bottom: Wiggles, Blurred Lines, So Meta, Feeling It, Realness, Woke, Wishlist, Manifest It, Keep Cool, Not Playing, Lucid, Bring It, On One, Eclipse, Prism

Lucid: I love Lucid, it’s a stunning brown duochrome with a blue flip. It’s SO. COOL!
Bring It: I’m there for this matte blue raspberry. ColourPop is putting a lot of pops of blue & green in their palettes lately. The Salvaje, Rendezvous and Chasing Rainbows palettes all have pops of similar colours.
On One: A shimmery oceanic Blue.
Eclipse: Eclipse is stunning. I love this silvery moonbeam type shade.
Prism: I don’t know why Colourpop describes Lucid as an “Eggplant” and Prism as an “Aubergine”. Aubergine is French for Eggplant… did you think I wouldn’t notice? This is a charcoal “Aubergine” shade.

Chasing Rainbows Palette Makeup Looks

Look #1 Blue Raspberry Twist

I saw J-kissa post a photo on instagram of a look she did with this palette and it contained the same blues & pinks I used here. The contrast of the pinks and blue raspberry really got me.

I used the pink shades Woke & Wish List in my crease, followed by Bring It. I cut the crease with concealer and placed the shade On One in the outer corners and on the outer 1/3 of my eyelids. Next I used the magical duochrome Lucid all over the centre of the cut crease. In the inner corner I placed the shade Blurred Lines.

ColourPop Chasing Rainbows Bumblebee Yellow & Charcoal Cut Crease

Look #2 Bumble Bee

This yellow look was really fun to create! My co-workers gave me weird looks but I didn’t care. I used Feeling it & Realness in the crease, then cut it with concealer. I placed So Meta all over the concealer and pressed Prism all over the outer corners of my eyes. It unfortunately didn’t smoke out as much as I would have liked. The charcoal didn’t build up well on top of So Meta. I still love how this eyeshadow look turned out!

Look #3 Fairy Pink

I COULD have gone with an easy wearable eyeshadow look, but where would be the fun in that? If I wanted to go wearable I would have used just Wiggles, Realness Feeling it. If you guys want to see a wearable everyday look with this let me know and I’ll post one on instagram.

Instead of wearable I went SUPER bold with a cotton candy halo eye using the shades Manifest It, Keep Cool, Not Playing, and Prism. I also put a pop of Blue on the lower lash line.

Chasing Rainbows Palette

The shades ARE printed under each eyeshadow pan, it’s just really hard to see in my photos with how reflective that prismatic packaging is!

Did you pick up the chasing rainbows palette?

Overall I’m happy that I got this palette as a freebie. I was pleasantly surprised that the formula is really good (Holiday palettes tend to be hit & miss). I probably won’t reach for the chasing rainbows palette very often beyond my review but it’s nice to have it around in case I’m feeling creative!

The packing is pretty and I think its weird that they released it for holiday. Because it doesn’t seem very holiday to me. Maybe they were trying something different but it’s great that you got it for free. The shades look nice and pigmented and it would be a fun palette to have when you’re feeling inspired to do something new or colorful. Great review.

I like most things about it except for the time they released it! I think it would have made a great spring & summer palette. I just want to wear boring neutral looks in the middle of winter lol. Thanks for reading!

Lovelovelove that Pink Fairy look, Cleia! That blue pop underneath was the perfect touch. I think this palette is so gorgeous though I would’ve never guessed it was part of the Holiday Collection. The swatches look so good! Glad to hear that the shadows performed so well. 🙂 & the best part is that you got it as a freebie! So cool!

Thank you! I liked it a lot more than I thought I would. I’m glad you liked the pop of blue, I wasn’t sure about it!
It’s so strange that this was a holiday palette. It IS a good palette, the timing is just strange to me! Thanks for reading x

When this palette was released I definitely thought it was really pretty, but it just didn’t grab me enough to make me place an order. Also, this just wasn’t seasonally appropriate for me. I know CP was trying to do something different, which was great, but the timing just didn’t sell this palette for me. Had this released in the Spring or Summer, I might have been more tempted!

Yes those were my thoughts exactly! I would never have bought this palette for myself it it wasn’t free with my order. I’ve enjoyed it so far but I’m not sure how much I will reach for it beyond this review. The timing was totally off! This would make a great Spring or Summer release, not a holiday release :S

LOVE this eye look! I do see what you mean when you say this isn’t a holiday palette. I like the idea of trying not to fall into a christian-centric color scheme, but this is still missing something.

Thank you! Yes I was expecting shades that weren’t as random for a holiday palette. They’re really nice but I usually expect to see a few darker shades for the holidays :S

I like that you have a lot of experience with ColourPop palettes so you know if there are unique shades within the palette! That’s something I wouldn’t know about since this is my first ColourPop palette.
I absolutely love love love the shades you did! That yellow is really flattering on you. And the pink one is so perfect for Valentine’s Day
Hahah I didn’t even notice the Eggplant/Aubergine thing!

I’m such a geek about ColourPop now! I can remember almost all of the shade names across my palettes, which is ridiculous. I should probably put that remembering power to something job-related or something but I can’t be bothered lol
Thank you! I was unsure about the shimmer in the yellow at first but I really liked it once my look was done. And you’re totally right, I wasn’t even thinking about Valentine’s day when I was working on this review!

Is it crazy I really like all the colour in this palette?! If you do colour you have to go in haha, not just one colourful shade in a nude palette. I love the pink fairy look you created, you look so beautiful and girly 😀

I don’t think that’s crazy at all! The colors are really bold & fun, just not wearable for everyone depending on how strict your workplace is lol
Thanks Chanelle! That look turned out better than I expected z

      • January 31, 2019 / 5:16 pm

I didn’t think about work places being strict, I love bold lips and I’ve never experienced any criticism. I tend to keep the eye look neutral though 😛

I think it really depends on where you work, a lot of jobs expect you to present yourself a certain way. I’m lucky that I don’t have any such rules about the way I look!
And it’s great that you’re able to wear bold lipstick without any trouble too!

I have to agree that this palette doesn’t say “holidays” at all. I’m pretty new to ColourPop (the only things I have from them are Yes, Please! and a Brow Boss pencil), so it’s nice to get an in depth review of their products! There are some really pretty colors in here, but like you mentioned it seems like you could find quite a few of them in their other palettes! Great review and I love the looks you created!

I was so confused when they released their holiday collection, I kept waiting for the “real” collection to come out! xD
I love their Brow Boss Pencil! I’ve ordered it a few times, it’s so affordable. Thank you for reading! I don’t think that this palette is a necessity but it’s fun to have around for sure 🙂

Me and my sister ended up getting this palette for free in one of our orders recently, I haven’t had the time to play with it much, because I’m still using the palettes I got for christmas! It’s hard to keep up with all the new makeup, and I want to make sure that I use it all! Great post Cleia, I’m glad to see that they all preform well, because i haven’t used all the colors yet. xxx

I still haven’t been able to try out everything from my haul, I’m glad I’m on a makeup no-buy right now because I also need to work on using what I already have! I hope you & your sister like the palette when you try it out!
