ColourPop Going Coconuts Palette review + 3 Looks & Swatches

Hey beauties!! After a little hiatus from shopping a little neutral palette from ColourPop caught my eye. The Going Coconuts palette contains cool tones browns & taupe shades that for once don’t pull warm on my skin tone! I remember when I bought the Double Entendre Palette and all those “cool toned” shades looked orange on my eyes 😂

The ColourPop Going Coconuts Palette is cool toned but also super wearable. Some palettes with cool tones can look grey against my skin and make me look ashy. Not this one! It’s the perfect mix of cool & neutral and although it is “just another neutral palette” I haven’t been reaching for much colour on my eyes. Working full time in a professional setting means that I don’t have time for full glam anymore and I want to be more polished than experimental with my makeup on work days.

I’m loving the shades and the laid back vibe of this palette. I took it to Hawaii with me at the start of December, along with the Too Faced Natural Love Palette. I probably reached for the Natural Love a little more, just to find those pops of colors but I was very happy with my look when I wore the Going Coconuts Palette.

ColourPop Going Coconuts Palette Review

Go loco for this toasted neutral 9 pan palette, perfect for your every day look. This super wearable palette is cute, compact, and ready for any look. This Toasted cool-toned 9 pan palette will make you go crazy! 🥥

The ColourPop Going Coconuts palette is a cool toned monochromatic neutral eyeshadow palette. It retails for $12USD and contains 9 x 0.9g shades for a value of $1.48 per gram.

Something I’ve noticed is that ColourPop has slowly started including less product in their 9-pan palettes for the same price. The Brown Sugar and Sol & Mar Palettes originally retailed for $12 and contained 1.1g per shadow. *The Brown Sugar Palette now retails for $15. wtf*

The Blue Moon & Just My Luck palettes retail for $12 and contain 1.0g of product. Now the most recent 9 pan palettes, Going Coconuts, Smoke Show and Uh-Huh Honey contain 0.9g per shadow which is 18% less product than the original quantities with no price reduction.

I personally have never hit pan on a ColourPop palette yet, so is it a big deal? Probably not. But it does show that the company may be starting to cut costs and corners.

Going Coconuts Palette Review ColourPop

The ColourPop Going Coconuts palette has simple off-white plastic packaging with some cute little coconuts drawn on the front. I know this will rub off eventually. If you want quality packaging that lasts I really can’t give ColourPop credit for that. A lot of their packaging has broken for me and the labels rub off BUT the products themselves are high quality.

The 9 shades inside have the names printed underneath each eyeshadow pan. Each shade is magnetic and removable.

Color Story

The Going Coconuts palette is a gorgeous cool toned neutral palette for everyday. You can combine it with other shadows or glitter to fill out the transition tones in your eye look or wear it on it’s own.

I love that Going Coconuts gives me something different than Brown Sugar, Colourpop’s warm toned neutral 9 pan palette. Cool tones were really lacking in my collection and these cool brown & pink shades are a breeze to wear. The shades in here do play it safe, which means that it will be easy for a lot of people to create simple & beautiful looks.

I wore this palette a lot in Hawaii this month, Coco Crush is beautiful as a lid shade! It’s a perfect taupey shimmer, I reach for it all the time!

I have a suspicion that ColourPop’s formula may have changed recently. I don’t know why… but the mattes in my most recent new ColourPop palettes aren’t as buttery or smooth as I’m used to. They seem a little firmer in the pan and don’t really wow me when swatched on my arm.

With a brush they pick up well and build nicely on the eyes. This palette is very beginner friendly in my opinion, but it might not wow you if you were expecting super pigmented, buttery shadows.

Fallout & Blend

Any shadow in the Going Coconuts palette containing shimmer does get a bit of fallout under my eyes. The shade Get Crackin‘ has a ton of fallout because it’s one of those matte sequin glitter shades that ColourPop likes to include for some reason. I can’t stand them because the glitter never stays on my eyes.

I can still get away with doing my foundation first, but I save concealer for when my eyes are done.

The shades in Going Coconuts blend easily on the eyes.. the mattes aren’t incredible but you can put together a nice look with them.

I had trouble with the shade Da Coco. It doesn’t grip to my eyelid or a dry brush. I need to use a wet brush when I wear it, or else it’s rather lacklustre. I adore Coco Crush and Palm Reader!

Going Coconuts Swatches ColourPop

Shredded: Matte – Vanilla pudding
Palm Reader: White & Gold Duochrome. This shade is very crumbly.
Coolada: Matte Taupe
Lovely Bunch: Matte brown
Coco Crush: Colourpop describes this as an “icy pale champagne”, but I would call it an ethereal bronze.
Shell Ya: Matte rosy brown
Get Crackin’: Sequin Matte cool toned brown
Da Coco: Silver Taupe. Supposedly it has violet flecks, I don’t see them.
Nutty: Matte dark chocolate brown

Going Coconuts
Makeup Looks

Look #1

This is the look that I’ve been wearing almost everyday. I generally don’t wear the lashes in real life, so the resulting look is much more subtle. This look is really just two cool toned brown matte shades and Coco Crush stamped all over the lid!

Green & Gold LookGreen & Gold Eyeshadow Look

Look #2:

When I think of coconuts I think of two things: Coconut Curry and Pina Coladas! A Pina Colada make a much better theme for an eyeshadow look though, so here we are. I used the ColourPop Uh Huh Honey palette for the yellow cut crease shades you see in this look, and the Just My Luck palette for the Green liner.

Neutral Glam Eye shadow

Look #3:

This look is the closest I could get to glam using the shades in the Going Coconuts palette. I was so frustrated with the sequin shade in the palette, Get Crackin’, I did all I could to get the glitter to stay but it ended up all over my cheeks instead. Useless I say, useless! Anyways, I liked the way this look turned out even if the end result wasn’t sparkly. It’s kind of a halo eye, but the shade in the center of my eyelid is a little darker than a traditional halo eye.

Final Thoughts

So I don’t think that Going Coconuts is the best ColourPop palette out there in terms of formula. There are definitely palettes with mattes that are more pigmented and buttery, but I don’t think that the drier formula will make or break the palette for you. As I said, it’s very beginner friendly and even makeup enthusiasts like myself can enjoy having something quick to throw on when there isn’t time for elaborate blending and experimenting.

Plus, it is only $12. I feel like it’s hard to complain with such a fantastic price!

Did you pick up the ColourPop Going Coconuts Palette?

Thank you for reading! I have several more palette reviews in the works, I bought way too much makeup in November. I’m on a no buy now, but I have plenty to work with! Talk Soon x

You really created an amazing eye look with this palette 🙂

  2. January 2, 2020 / 7:45 am

Was not aware they had been raising their prices on a few palettes and that they’re also including less product on newer palettes. That’s a shame but I guess the brand has grown a lot in the past few years.. as long as they stay fairly affordable I got no problem with that.
Sucks you had some problems with some shades as in the past with other palettes, it’s been a breeze. Hopefully it is just a batch and not necessarily the entire formula because I like their formula.
Loving look #1 a lot by the way. Super pretty!

    • January 19, 2020 / 10:32 pm

Nobody talks about that on YouTube but I checked the quantities, it’s so weird that the new palettes are slowly having less and less.
But prices are going up everywhere, I guess it’s just inflation.
I hope it’s just a batch issue, but I also had troubles with the Anna palette I got too 🤔 I don’t know what’s going on!
      Thank you!

      • January 20, 2020 / 11:41 pm

That’s very shady but oh least you are telling your audience about it.
I wonder if they are cutting corners, if it was one palette I would understand but two or more? Definitely not a coincidence. Always happens when a company starts getting big, they start changing formulas without telling customers. They do it slowly and with each palette so as to not make the customer notice. Then again, it could* be a batch issue. Idk. But it’s always a good idea to look into those little details in the long run.

        • January 20, 2020 / 11:49 pm

I noticed that the most recent two palettes that came out don’t contain a mirror and have only 9 shades but they cost $14?? I don’t understand why! The ones with mirrors are usually 12 😒

I think I’ll be taking a break from ColourPop for now, their selection is just too overwhelming at this point.

          • January 20, 2020 / 11:55 pm

Now that* is infuriating. They know people will buy their products regardless of price I bet. And for good reason I guess, they have become well known for their amazing formula at affordable prices. But a huge change like that might steer people away.
Idk if this is true or not, I think Rawbeautykristi might have briefly mentioned it, but brands have really slowed down with palette releases? I’m not aware if CP was one of those brands, I havent been keeping up with any of their palettes since….the orange one came out? Lol

          • January 21, 2020 / 12:01 am

I saw a lot of annoyed comments on trendmood about it, but I don’t know if it will actually help or not.

It would be wonderful if that were true! I think less makeup releases in general would be good, and then brands might put more thought into their launches. Colourpop definitely hasn’t slowed down. They just announced a mint palette, the blush crush collection, and another Ulta exclusive 😒

          • January 21, 2020 / 10:20 am

            Maybe not lol.
Yes, that way we as consumers have time to be excited and enjoy each palette and other products before the next stuff comes out. With so many products coming out so often I almost dont feel as excited for it because I know something is going to come out that will make me feel excited. Lol. Luckily I dont go out and buy everything I want when it comes out so in a way, my self control is saving me from not feeling excited about the stuff I already have lol.

Love your in-depth reviews- I totally need to get back to reading blog posts! You can’t cover everything on IG after all. This palette looks lovely despite mixed thoughts.

Thank you! I’ve been so out of it too, I took a little bit of time off from WordPress and now I forget to check my reader 😄
Most people seem to love this palette on IG!

  4. December 29, 2019 / 4:22 pm

Glad that you found your ideal neutral palette that doesn’t pull ashy on you! It’s really good that you’ve noticed the change in the quality of their eyeshadows as well as the amount – hopefully the changes aren’t too drastic. Unfortunately, it seems to be the case across the board – I mean, even drugstore prices have shot up in recent years :/

    • December 30, 2019 / 2:03 am

I’m really hoping that this isn’t going to be the trend, but I knew that ColourPop prices were too good to last forever. It’s too bad about the inflation. This palette is still good, I just don’t think it’s as good as previous releases :S

  5. December 26, 2019 / 8:17 pm

Ah such a bummer to hear that their prices are increasing while the quality is going down. I feel like they know the sequin/glitter shades aren’t that good but they put them in to fill up more pans. I probably am just being cynical though. 😛 Look #2 you created is so fun yet subtle, I love it!!

    • December 27, 2019 / 4:10 pm

I’m so annoyed that the palettes have less product in them now! And they really need to stop putting glitter in their palettes, I don’t know anyone who actually really likes ColourPop’s glitter :S

Thanks for reading Hunida, look 2 is my favourite too!

  6. December 26, 2019 / 1:25 pm

Such a beautiful palette, and infinitely wearable. Those are my favorites, no matter how “boring” they may seem! 😉

    • December 27, 2019 / 4:10 pm

They’re the palettes we reach for the most! Thanks for reading! x

  7. December 25, 2019 / 10:45 pm

This palette is really pretty but it’s a shame it’s not up there with other Colourpop palettes in terms of formula :/ look #3 is my favourite, I love how wearable and understated this one is!

    • December 27, 2019 / 4:11 pm

I don’t know what’s going on with them, I haven’t been really wowed by a palette since Sweet Talk 🙁
      Thanks Chanelle! x

      • December 27, 2019 / 4:30 pm

Pumping out constant new releases probably affects the quality x
