ColourPop Just My Luck Palette Review

It’s been a hot minute since I reviewed an eyeshadow palette on my blog. I reviewed the Pixi Eye Reflection Palettes at the beginning of March, and the Chasing Rainbows Palette at the end of January. Today we’re getting back into it with the ColourPop Just My Luck palette! The Just My Luck Palette has a green colour scheme and continues ColourPop’s trend of colour themed eyeshadow palettes. It was released in time for St. Patricks day for anyone living in the US. I’m in Canada so my palette definitely didn’t arrive in time. What can you do though, right?

ColourPop Just My Luck Palette Review

We know you’ve been waiting for this baby. Meet the newest sis to our monochromatic palette fam! She’s so lucky, we know she’ll be the star of your makeup collection. With 9 richly pigmented shadows in every shade of green you can think of, it’s easy to create the perfect monochromatic look. Got fun, creative, bold looks up your sleeve? We’re totally here for it. — ColourPop

The ColourPop Just My Luck palette retails for $12USD and contains 9.9g of product. This works out to $1.21/g which is such a great deal compared to similar quality palettes on the market. The Just My Luck palette definitely follows the monochromatic palette trend, but I disagree that all of their 9 pan palettes have a monochromatic scheme. The Mar Palette certainly wasn’t monochromatic with all of the sandy neutral shades with a few blue/teal pops of colour. I also disagree wth the description that this palette contains “every shade of green you can think of”, and we’ll get into that shortly.

Just My Luck Palette Packaging

Packaging

The Just my luck palette has simple green plastic packaging. I actually preferred the old white packaging of the Sol & Mar palettes before they updated them to be “monochromatic” but that’s just a preference. The packaging is a minty green like the shades inside and has shiny lettering. The shade names are printed on the back of the palette as well as under each shade.

I love that these 9 pan palettes have a mirror but I honestly wish that Colourpop had kept using their cardboard packaging. I find that the cardboard palettes are more “cushioned” if that makes sense. I’ve dropped cardboard palettes and the shadows were find, but a heavier plastic like this is more prone to shadows breaking or popping out.

Just My Luck Color Story

Colour Story

The Just My Luck palette was not at all what I expected from an all-green palette. I can picture several shades of green that I would have preferred to be in this palette instead of the mint chocolate chip madness inside.

Chances Are is a pale mint green matte. It’s a nice shade, but I don’t think that it really serves as a transition shade for all of the shades in the Just My Luck Palette, especially the Olive shade Olive U and the forest greens. Kiss My Hass is also a beautiful matte shade, but once again it’s very minty. Which is fine, but I was really left wanting a shade that was the clover green on the lucky charms package. Or a mossy green matte shade, or a Pear green. There are so many other greens I would have liked to see.

There are so many shades in here that are repeats of each other. Big Banks is so similar to Kiss My Hass with the one difference being that Big Banks is metallic. Mo Bamba and So-So are also quite similar.

I felt like the Just My Luck palette really needed an olive or mossy matte shade because whenever I tried to use Olive U I hated the way the minty shades looked in the crease. I wanted more variety in the greens in this palette, or at least transition shades that worked with just about every shadow.

Just My Luck Palette Review

Pigmentation, Fallout, & Blend

I didn’t have any trouble getting these shadows to show up on my eyes. A primer really helped with chances are, but even on it’s own it was fine. The darker greens stained up skin after wearing them for more than a few hours. I wasn’t expecting that to be honest, I usually notice staining with red toned shades, not greens!

The shimmers do have quite a bit of fallout, especially Mary Jane and Olive U. I have to do my eyes first when I use the ColourPop Just My Luck palette.

The majority of the shadows do blend well but I would notice some of the darker shades like Mo Bamba and Act Natural gathering in certain spots when using windshield wiper motions with my brush. It’s nothing that a little patience can’t fix but I thought I should mention it. Other than that the quality is there, the formula is quite good for $12.

Makeup Details: Almar Clear Complextion Foundation, Pixi Beach Rose Blush, Milani Strobe Light Highlighter, ColourPop Private Party Bronzer, ColourPop Brow Boss Pencil, Elf Brow Lift Pencil, Esqido Peaches & Cream Lashes, Ardell 110 Natural Lashes.

Look #1: Minty

This look is my least favourite of the three. I’m just not a fan of minty shades on me I guess, I think they look a little strange. Maybe I just need to wear them more. Overall it’s not bad, but I probably would gravitate towards the next two looks.

Look #2: Forest Sprite

I’m not gonna lie, I felt like a child of the Kokiri forest when I was wearing this look. That’s from Zelda Ocarina of Time if you’re not sure what I’m talking about. I really do love the shade Mary Jane, I wanted more shades like it! It’s such a beautiful shade for a cut crease. I had to dip into another palette for the crease, I used the shade Apple Mojito from the Sephora Collection.

ColourPop Just My Luck Olive U Makeup Look

Look #3: I’m Charmed

Olive is such a beautiful colour! I think it’s flattering on a lot of people but it’s not one of those shades that you think to reach for all the time. I used Chances Are & Kiss my Hass in the crease but I hated the way it looked with Olive U all over the lid so I went over the crease with Charmed. I hate that I have to use both sides of the palette separately to get a look that I like! In the end I did really like this one though.

Did you pick up the Just My Luck Palette?

What do you guys think of the monochromatic palette idea? In theory I think it’s a good idea but at the same time I feel really limited by palettes like these ones. I’m sure I’ll be combining this one with the rest of my collection when I use it. Let me know what palettes you’d like to see reviewed next! Talk soon x

I actually really liked the monochrome look, but I didn’t even think about how the cardboard ones have more cushion! Great post Cleia, I don’t think this is a palette for me, but I really enjoyed reading your post xxx

Thanks! I think I just like the look of Olive tones on me more than the first one but it came out nice too.
I only noticed that about the cardboard palettes because I’m so accident prone, I always end up dropping my makeup haha
      Thanks for reading! x

Olive shades are a must! I’m so glad it’s in the palette too, it’s something that I know I’ll reach for 🙂 Thanks for reading!

You did such a great job with this palette! Looks 2 and 3 are my faves – Mary Jane looks so much brighter and more chartreuse on your eyes compared to the swatch. I know it kind of sucks to have a brown in a palette that’s supposed to be all about the greens, but Charmed looks really nice with Olive U and I think it’s necessary!

Thank you! Mary Jane is so bright, I love it. I didn’t mind the brown shade actually, it does go well with the other shades, especially the less minty shades. I didn’t mean it to sound like I didn’t like that shade!
      Thanks for reading 🙂

I didn’t pick this up because I don’t wear greens often, but it is a pretty palette. However, I agree that there are plenty of other shades that they could have used. You created some pretty looks with it though!

These looks are BEAUTIFUL – you’re so talented!! I see what you mean about some of the shades being a little too similar. I still think this is a fun palette and you obviously can make some beautiful looks from it. You’re so right too about there being so many different greens… I didn’t even realize how many could have been included in this palette.

Ocarina of Time was my favorite! I loved Majora’s mask too 😊
It IS a nice palette, I just wanted more variety. But for $12 it’s pretty good!

I see what you mean with the shades being repeats of each other and it definitely is not every shade of green I can think of. Still the swatches look really pretty and I love the looks you created with it, especially the second one, Mary Jane is such a beautiful colour. 😊

I still think it’s a great palette for only $12! Mary Jane is beautiful! Thanks for reading Hollie 💚
