Hey beautiful! Today I’m reviewing e.l.f’s Shadow Lock Eyeshadow Primer. I’m doing something a little different this time around, instead of just giving you my overall thoughts and pros & cons I thought it would be fun to do a comparison between my regular primer and e.l.f’s Shadow Lock Eyeshadow Primer. I’m using the e.l.f. Golden Goddess eyeshadow quad on my eyes.
On my left eye (your right) I used Arbonne’s Makeup Primer under my eyeshadow and on my right (your left) I used e.l.f’s Primer.
Here’s the primers both applied with no eyeshadow yet. My Arbonne primer is translucent and the e.l.f primer is white. The e.l.f primer is full of sparkles, I got them all over that side of my face!
It’s much harder to apply eyeshadow over the e.l.f primer. It almost felt like trying to spread eyeshadow across glue, it really didn’t want to move. I’ve added my crease shade with my e.l.f defining eye brush (which was only a dollar!), gold on the lid and lined lightly with the darkest shade in the quad. The light is coming from the left so the crease looks a little darker on the right but in reality they were pretty close. I really like these eyeshadows for a quick eye look, the colours go quite well together.
Okay so about four hours have passed and this is how the two compare. The e.l.f. side is already starting to fade a little more than the Arbonne side but its still there. These are $2 eyeshadows, so a bit of that fading is due to the eyeshadow not the primer. E.l.f actually held up pretty well at this point, I was surprised.
This is what I’m left with at the end of the day. It was really hard to get the lighting right, I try to do my photos in natural light but it’s hard to do that once the sun starts going down! The e.l.f side is bit lighter than the Arbonne side but they both lasted most of the day. Unless you were looking for it I don’t think it would be blatantly obvious to anyone.
I’m not entirely sold on the e.l.f Shadow Lock Eyeshadow Primer. It doesn’t apply very evenly, the tube dries up quickly and it’s hard to get an even eyeshadow application across the lid. The sparkles aren’t a big deal here since my eyeshadow has a shimmer to it, but if I was going for a matte look it might bother me. I was impressed at how long it lasted in comparison though!
My Rating: 3/5
