With only one month left of Spring to go I definitely have Summer on my mind. I have a love hate relationship with Summer. I LOVE the sunshine, gardening, taking long walks and going to the beach. But in the last five years wildfires have gotten really bad across Canada (and the rest of the world really). So far my city isn’t under a wildfire watch but it’s concerning how we lost most of last summer to smoke advisories and yellow skies.
I hope that we see less forest fires and better containment this year, but it’s too early to tell. We work with what we’ve got right? For days when the sky is bright blue and we can go out and enjoy the sunshine I have compiled a list of my favourite Glowy Summer Essentials to survive the heat.

Glowy Summer Essentials
To stay glowy in the Summer I like to use a few things: Sunscreen, primer, bronzer, highlighter and lipgloss. I’ve been skipping foundation altogether lately. If I want some coverage I’ll use a BB cream with SPF like the it Cosmetics CC+ Cream. Thankfully my skin has been clear so I haven’t needed a ton of concealer. Please keep in mind that I have dry skin and the products I mention in this post work well for my skin type but might not work for you if your skin is oilier than mine.
Okay the number one summer essential that should be in literally everyone’s routine is sunscreen. Sunburn = Skin Cancer. Also a blotchy red burn = Not Cute! I already burnt once this Spring when I spent a day at an outdoor shooting range. I was wearing SPF but I guess I didn’t put enough on my nose or chest. Voila, sunburn. Hello darkness my old friend…
If I am going anywhere near the ocean or a lake I like to wear Reef Safe sunscreen which doesn’t contain Oxybenzone, a chemical known to cause coral bleaching. Most chemical sunscreens contain this ingredient and Hawaii has actually gone ahead and banned the sale of these sunscreens. I have a few chemical sunscreens that are near empty, such as my Hawaiian Tropic & Aveeno Hydrate & Protect.
I really hope that both of these companies go reef safe soon. The Hawaiian Tropic Sheer Touch Sunscreen smells amazing and Aveeno Hydrate & Protect doubles as a face moisturizer for me during the hottest parts of Summer.
Bronzer is near the top of my list when I think about getting that Summer Glow! Bronzer warms up the face and helps achieve a beautiful sunkissed glow. My favourite bronzer for summer is the Sunny Honey bronzer from Too Faced. Unfortunately it isn’t available as a single but it can be found in the Natural Face Palette.
I also enjoy the Tropic Like It’s hot bronzer from the same palette, the shimmer is really nice when I get a tan!
I’m usually all about a dewy look but when it gets above 24 degrees I need something mattifying on my face to control oil. I only recently discovered the Milk Makeup Luminous Blur Stick in the May Boxycharm but so far I’ve been enjoying using it for the added luminosity and to blur pores. It adds a tiny bit of glow to the skin while keeping it matte. It’s been quite warm here the past few days and it’s been nice to wear this in lieu of foundation.

I also started using the Thrive Causemetics Brilliant Eye Brightener again. The shade Stella is a beautiful and helps me to look more awake in the mornings. You can read my review Here!
Of course we can’t forget about highlighter! I feel like summer is my favourite time to shine with a blinding highlight! From top to bottom we have the Tarte Pro Glow liquid highlighter which is a little bit glittery when worn on it’s own but looks beautiful when mixed with foundation.
Next is another liquid highlighter, the Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector Liquid Highlighter in the shade Moonstone. This highlighter is stunning! It can be mixed with foundation or worn on top of it. It blends out perfectly with a beauty sponge and doesn’t move the foundation underneath it.
My last highlighter pick for this time of year is the Becca Pressed Highlighter in Moonstone. It’s technically the same shade as the previous liquid highlighter I mentioned but it looks slightly different on the skin. The liquid one is more of a natural highlight once blended into the skin but Moonstone really pops as a pressed powder.
Back when I started my blog I hated wearing lipgloss. How things change! Lately I’ve been loving a glossy lip and I’ve been looking for more places to wear my glittery Night Light Ultra Glossy Lip from ColourPop. It has a metallic sheen and lots of glitter which is a little crazy for me but I love it worn over a darker nude lipstick.
I’m also loving the Kylie Cosmetics lipgloss in Literally, it’s been one of my favourites for two years!
