Hey everyone, I’m starting a new series on my blog this week called “Break It Down”. In this series I’ll be talking about new releases that have been recently announced in terms of uniqueness and price per gram. I will also be sharing my final decision of whether I will or will not be purchasing it. Please keep in mind that I CAN’T buy anything right now as we just bought a house and we need to make sure we don’t deplete our emergency fund, but I’ll tell you if I WOULD buy these products if circumstances were different. I did a similar post to this one called Why I’m Not Buying the ColourPop Disney Designer Collection and I had so many great discussions in the comments section with both people who agreed and those who disagreed with my thoughts. I’m all for discussion on my blog!
Today I’m beginning my Break it Down series with a discussion of the recently announced Kylie Cosmetics Valentine’s Day Collection.
Kylie Cosmetics Valentines Day Collection | Break Down
First of all, I would like to start by saying that I am not a fan of Valentine’s Day. My husband & I have always thought that Valentine’s Day is a stupid holiday that capitalizes on people’s relationships. Don’t we already have birthdays & anniversaries & Christmas for gift giving? And shouldn’t we want to make each other feel special all year round instead of putting so much stock into one day?
When I worked in a restaurant Valentine’s Day was the worst, all these lovey-dovey couples would come in all sickening adorable and stuff and I would have the most hectic night of the year making minimum wage ($8.40CAD at the time). I did make tips, but it still didn’t seem worth it to me.
Even though I don’t appreciate all the usual things that go along with Valentine’s Day I now enjoy an excuse to wear bright pink makeup that becomes socially acceptable on February 14th. The Kylie Valentine’s Day collection caught my eye this year so I wanted to share my thoughts on it!
Products in the Collection
The Kylie Cosmetics Valentine’s Day Collection launches on February 1st 2019 (tomorrow!) and includes an eyeshadow palette, three lip sets and a glitter cream eyeshadow & a blush. The palette & blush packaging is adorned in little red bras and the lip sets have red lip prints all over them. Honestly I’m not a fan of the red bra design, but it wouldn’t deter me from ordering.
The products in this Valentine’s Day Collection can be purchased individually or as a set for $195USD. I don’t know why anyone would need the entire bundle, but there ya go just in case you’re feeling spendy 😉
Kylie Valentine’s Day Eyeshadow Palette
The eyeshadow palette in the Kylie Valentine’s Day Collection retails for $45USD and contains twelve 1.4g eyeshadows: six mattes & 6 glittery shimmer shades for a total of 16.8g (0.6oz) of product. This works out to $2.69 per gram. For comparison sake the ABH Soft Glam palette costs $4.05/g, the UD Naked Palettes cost $3.19, and the Tarte Amazonian Clay Palette costs $2.17/g. I’ve always found Kylie Cosmetics products to be pretty expensive but when you look at the comparisons this palette isn’t nearly as expensive as Anastasia Beverly Hills or Urban Decay.
The Trendmood Swatches made me think of a combination of the ColourPop Ooh La La and It’s My Pleasure Palettes. However, the swatches from Kylie I shared above don’t really remind me of anything? The only other palette that comes to mind (after I scoured the eyeshadow section at Sephora) when looking at these swatches is the Huda Gold Remastered palette. They aren’t exact dupes by any means but the idea of pale lavender & gold shimmers paired with bold pinks & reds are present in the Huda Palette as well. I think that this colour story is really pretty and I like that there are some lighter “nude” shades to offset the bright bold pinks.
Am I interested in buying it? Yes… and No. I don’t think this is a colour story that I will use year round, so it seems like a waste of money to me because I’m about to drop a ton of money for a downpayment on a house. If you don’t have the purchase of a home looming over your head and you love bold pink & purple shades I think that this palette will be right up your alley!
Kylie Glitter Eyes Cream Eyeshadow
It really irks me when products are named in a way that doesn’t properly represent the colour of the shade. Why is this called “Roses are Red” when it’s a cream shadow!? Anyways, this liquid eyeshadow contains 6.3 grams of product and retails for $20USD (3.17/g). This seems like a little much to me. This reminds me a lot of ColourPop’s Super Nova Shadows. The packaging is a little bit different but the swatches of Kylie’s Glitter Eyes on her website look the same to me as the Supernova Shadows. I haven’t tried either, so you can correct me if I’m wrong but it seems expensive to spend $20 on a liquid shadow when ColourPop seems to have the same ones for $7?
Am I interested in buying? No. To this date I have only found one liquid eyeshadow that I actually liked, and that was the Stila 3D Dazzle Glitter & Glow Shadows. I don’t like the ColourPop SuperNova shadows and I doubt I would like this one either.
Kylie Crush Blush
This blush was released specifically for the Valentine’s Day collection. You guys know that I don’t really get excited about blushes, so for me this is just kind of meh. I generally don’t think that blush is worth the splurge and I already have a few blushes to finish in my 2019 Project pan. This shade is a pretty peachy colour so if you like peach blushes you might really like this.
Kylie’s blushes typically retail for $20USD regularly and contain 7.5g of product, but the blush in the Valentine’s Day Collection retails for $18. Assuming that the amount of product will stay the same that works out to $2.4/g. Some blushes that I have in my collection that I THOUGHT were in the same-ish price range are the Tarte Amazonian Clay Blushes which retails for $29USD and contain 5.6g of product ($5.18/g) and the Urban Decay Afterglow Blush which retails for $26USD and contains 6.8g of product ($3.8/g of product). When I took a closer look I couldn’t find ANY blushes at Sephora that were at a comparable price point. This Kylie blush is a much better value than non-drugstore blushes I own… Mind. Blown.
Am I Interested in Buying: Yes. After I looked into the value of these blushes I’m actually intrigued. If I ever fully hit pan on my Tarte Amazonian Clay Blush I will look into ordering some Kylie Blushes!
Kylie Cosmetics Valentine’s Day Lip Collections
I’m going to group all three lip sets into one category because they contain the same products with variations in shade. There are three Kylie lip sets that came out for this collection: The Love Set, The Soulmate Set and The Forever Set. Each set retails for $42USD and contains new shades of Matte Lipstick, Lipliners and Lip Glosses.
You’ll save $3 buying these collections as opposed to buying a lip kit for $29 and a High Gloss for $16. It’s not much, and it’s irrelevant anyways because these shades aren’t being sold individually as far as I know.
Out of the three sets I am loving the look of the Soulmate Set. The other two sets are nice but it I was going to spend money on one of these sets I would want a shade that is unique & interesting, not just a nude pink.
There’s a lot of debate about if Kylie lip kits are actually worth the price. ColourPop has Very similar lipsticks for a fraction of the price so it is hard to justify spending the money on these sets. That being said I own and have reviewed the Kylie Matte Lip Kit in Dolce K on my blog and I absolutely love it. I have yet to find an opaque lip gloss formula that I enjoy as much as I enjoy my Kylie Literally Lip Gloss so I would be thrilled to have another Kylie lip set.
Am I interested in buying? YES, I want the soulmate set!
I think it’s so fun when brands come out with sets for different holidays, even the one’s that aren’t Christmas. The Kylie Cosmetics Valentine’s Day Collection is a little gimicky with the love theme and the red bras… but it IS Valentine’s Day after all and not everyone is a grinch about February 14th like me.
To recap, if I wasn’t about to buy a house I would probably order the palette. The liquid shadow is a hard pass for me, but if I ever pan some of my blushes I would be interested in trying some from Kylie Cosmetics. I would also love to pick up one of the lip sets!
What do you think of this collection? Will you be picking anything up?
