I took a little break from blogging last week to give myself a bit of a refresh. It’s easy to fall into the trap of feeling like you need to blog instead of blogging because you want to, so I felt I needed some time away. I focused on some things I’ve put on the back burner, like my guitar and a few video games. I’m back today with a mini review of Maybelline Dream Velvet Foundation!
Maybelline Dream Velvet
Maybelline Dream Velvet Foundation is labelled as a “Soft-Matte Hydrating Foundation”. The hydrating claim was what drew me to this product as I have very dry skin this time of year. It retails at Maybelline for $16.99CAD but I found my bottle for around $10 at Superstore!
Formula
This foundation is somewhere between a mouse and a cream. It’s very light and whipped. I don’t personally find it very hydrating, but I feel like my skin is also drier than most so I need more out of my hydrating products. It blends easily with a brush, but I find it works best to use a wet blending sponge.
Coverage
I consider this a medium coverage foundation. If you’ve read any of my foundation posts you probably know that I am a light coverage kind of girl, but if you apply it thinly and really blend it you can get a lighter coverage. Alternatively you can apply more for fuller coverage. The shade I chose is totally wrong for me, it’s more pink and orange than my actual skin tone so I apply this very lightly when I use it! Unfortunately this foundation was cakey on me even when applied lightly. It could just be that my skin is so dry that everything cakes on the dry spots, but I think it was a bit more than that.
Shade Selection
There are twelve shades to choose from. The colour of the bottles aren’t really accurate to what the shades actually are, so don’t be like me and pick based on the bottle! Make sure you use a tester to get the right shade. I have the shade 05 Warm Porceline and I definitely needed a shade or two lighter. My before and after is below!

I have a bottle of this I only used once. I had the cakey issues also so I never tried it again!
Cakey foundation is the worst! I tried a couple of different primers with it and it didn’t really help. I feel like I have to finish the bottle though because I bought it!
I wonder if you could try mixing another foundation with it. Maybe one with a more liquidy consistency to counteract the cakeyness!
hmm I’ll have to try that. Or maybe mixing it with maracuja oil?
That’s a good idea too!!
The result looks amazing!!
My sister actually has this foundation, and I found this foundation quite comfortable on my skin! While I didn’t use it for a full day, I enjoyed it for the bit of time I had it on. I also have extremely dry skin, so it might not be good for me for long term use! In the picture you took, you can’t tell the foundation is too dark for you though, which is good! Great review as always love xxx
Melina
Yay, I’m glad it works well for you! It’s so weird with this foundation how much the lighting changes it, in dim light the shade looks lighter on but it bright sunlight it looked more pink on me. I’m hoping my skin will be less dry this spring/summer so it might work a little better for me. Thanks for reading!! =D
This shade is so perfect on you, I’ll have to try it!
Lovely post !
