My 30 Before 30 List | Life, Goals, Dreams

If you’ve been following me on instagram you might have seen that I decided to write a 30 before 30 list. A 30 Before 30 list is basically a list of all the things that I wish to accomplish or do before I turn 30. I’m 26 right now and I’ve definitely been re-evaluating my life choices. I’ve fallen into the trap of putting work before my family, my friends, and worst of all, myself.

All Work No Play

A while ago I posted a life update in my If We Were Having Coffee post where I shared some of my experiences dealing with stress. I work in a very specialized field right now and the prospect of being laid off terrifies me. My skills don’t necessarily transfer to other jobs, and I would have to move to another city to remain in my chosen career. Having just bought a house with my husband who also has a job here you can imagine that the prospect of moving doesn’t appeal to us much!

I feel like I have to give 110% every day to stay on top, and I’ve been missing birthdays, holidays and things that are important to me because of this fear of being let go. I shared on instagram in this post that I was recently passed over for a job, and I was wondering why I’ve been working so hard and missing out on life when it seems to amount to nothing. At least I still have a job right? I’m not so sure anymore. I find my career rewarding, but there’s more to life than a job.

Choose Joy

Re-evaluations

What is the point of working so hard when it means I don’t get to spend time with my family? I’m an introvert but I’ve spent meaningful time with my family twice so far this entire year. We live 10 minutes away from each other! Why am I so scared of asking for days off? Why am I working 40+ hours a week as a part time employee and feeling like I’ll be left behind if I take a step back?

Not being chosen for the job was eye opening for me. I want to live my life instead of letting it pass my by as I wait for that One Day where I’ll be retired and able to relax. I might not even live to be 65! Who knows? I completely believe in the importance of budgeting and saving money for retirement and we have started doing that, but there are things I want to do, places I want to see and I want to see them while I’m young and able. So here is my 30 Before 30 list. I might not be able to do all of these things, but I’ll be damned if I don’t try.

What’s on your 30 before 30 list?

I know I might not be able to do all of these things in the next 4 years but I think the key is to have a goal. I want to be intentional about living my life to the fullest while being responsible enough save for the future. There has to be a balance! Wish me luck friends, and here’s to the future 🙂

I hope you are able to cross everything off in these next 4 years, Cleia! You got this!

You’re not going to get laid off especially with how hard you work but legally speaking, you are considered full-time at 40+ hours a week so your job needs to at least give you the benefits of that. Maybe the next promotion will be yours!! ♡

    • May 29, 2019 / 9:22 pm

Thanks Hunida! I hope so too! I’ve already gotten a head start on a few things this summer, and I’m planning more. I’d going to do my Scuba diving certification in December!

My hours have been reduced to 32 now, I think they realized that I was working way more than I was supposed to be. It leaves me so much more time for all these things I want to do! Thanks!

      • May 31, 2019 / 4:38 am

Eeee! So exciting that you’ll be getting your scuba diving certificate. 😄 & I’m glad they reduced yours hrs! ♡

I’m so excited! Work life balance here I come 🙂

I’m turning 25 in a week and a half and I actually started thinking about my 30 before 30! I kinda wish I made a list like this when I turned 18 or something to see how much of what I wanted back then I had gotten to accomplish, but oh well! I really want to go to Iceland too! While the plane tickets aren’t so expensive, a few of my friends have gone, and they tell me that everything else is so expensive! Great post, I really hope you accomplish everything before you hit 30 girl. You are such an amazing person and really deserve all the good of the world. Experience everything you desire, you can do it xx

You should DEFINITELY write a 30 before 30 list, It’s good to have dreams & goals to keep you focused!
We’re planning on combining a trip to iceland with a trip to the rest of Europe so we can take advantage of their stopover perks – you can choose a layover of up to a week to explore the country!
I have also heard that it’s crazy expensive 🙁 I have to start saving! I think we’ll be going at the end of 2020.
Thank you so much Melina! I hope that I’m not setting my sights too high with this list. If not I’ll have to expand it into a 40 before 40 list haha

  3. May 16, 2019 / 5:59 pm

Great list! I think I have a few of this in my bucket list. I have also been re-evaluating my life in general, though our circumstances are different, I feel the same way. And i also feel like I’m behind everyone else. Everyone has had a head start and I’m gonna start from square one in a year or less, hopefully sooner rather than later. I think a lot of these can be achieved, and I’m sure you can cross a few at once, like going to California and Disney Land. Far but worth it.
Good luck on all of these! Sending lots of positive vibes your way!

    • May 17, 2019 / 12:34 pm

But in some ways you’re so far ahead other people our age! You’re married and have already started your family, I know people who are stressed out because they haven’t settled down yet, and are worried about when they will have their first child. We’re all different and take different steps and paths in life, there isn’t a “right” way to go about it. I do understand where you’re coming from though.
I hope you’re able to knock some things off your bucket list too!
I think we’ll be going to either Hawaii or Disneyland in November! We’re pricing things out to see which will actually end up being cheaper, but I’m happy we’ll get a break from work & the city here. Thanks for reading!

      • May 17, 2019 / 9:10 pm

Yes, I guess that’s true. Different paths for different people. I feel so impatient about it though LOL. The way this society measures success makes me feel like I haven’t done anything yet LOL
Ooooh I’d have a hard time picking between Hawaii and Disneyland. I might choose Hawaii only because I haven’t been there, but I also haven’t been to DL since I was 12… I wonder how much different it will be with CL.. LOL
Have an amazing weekend Cleia! 🙂 xx

        • May 20, 2019 / 3:27 pm

Screw society, you do you! I know so many people who have done everything they were “supposed” to and then realized they hated it. My husband included, he went to Uni, got a job, got married and then realized he hated his job. So he completely started over by upgrading his high school marks, then went back to school when he was 26.

It’s never to late to start something new or go back to square one!

It’s tough! I also didn’t realize how expensive Disneyland is, the 2 day tickets are $300CAD. You guys would probably have a blast taking CL there, but it’s also so expensive. I never went to disney and I had a good childhood! I never felt upset that we didn’t go or anything lol
          Have a good week!

          • May 21, 2019 / 10:34 am

You make a great point. I was talking to another mom yesterday and she was telling how ever since she moved to Oregon, her family has always moved around and now that she’s settle and bought a house last year, she doesn’t like it and wants to move. A house is more permanent unfortunately lol.
Yeah in terms of career I know I still have time, I do want to go back to school for something but I need a job first, that I like, so I can work hard to getting a bachelor’s or masters to move up. I am so seriously ambitious about my future but right now is not the right time lol. Patience is key. It’s not my time yet, I will get there. I’m just notorious at negative self-talk, I’m my own worst enemy lol.
OMG I know!! I don’t even know WHY it’s even that expensive, and when I was there you’d wait like an hour just to get on a ride so that was…..lame.. LOL.
I would say go to Hawaii instead and enjoy a nice, relaxing vacation by the beach and eat good food! For me right now, just thinking about disneyland seems like a chore and might be far more stressful with CL haha.
Thanks, have an amazing week as well!

          • May 22, 2019 / 8:14 pm

Oh yes, a house is definitely something that you want to make sure you like before committing. We had so many people telling is to buy a “starter” home instead of what we want to live in for the rest of our lives but I never saw the logic in that. Why buy something that I’ll have to sell and lose money on later? I’m glad that we waited for the right one!
You’ll get there! That’s great that you have goals and it’s so much easier to get degrees/diplomas etc these days with online courses being available in addition to classroom learning. Just stay positive 🙂
I’m hoping if we go on a weekday the line ups won’t be as bad, but who knows? I can see how it could be stressful!

          • May 24, 2019 / 11:35 pm

Yes sometimes waiting is the best thing you can do. I’d never buy a starter home either lol. What’s the point? My cousin is in real estate so he can help us buy a house, but he was just telling me that I could buy a house for cheap, and fix it. But I was like… I don’t want to do that either. I want a house that looks nice, has big windows, a garage, flat driveway, a big backyard and a front lawn LMAO. The point of buying a home is NOT to fix it in my opinion. Not only will I have to worry about paying my mortgage and property taxes, I will also have to worry about fixing it too? Idk.. I guess it depends on the house, but I’d rather not do much and instead just do slight remodels like flooring, cabinets, and all those smaller things lol.

          • May 29, 2019 / 9:06 pm

I completely agree! My in-laws said we should fix a home up and I was like “you’re overestimating my abilities”. Neither of us are very handy so we’d have to pay people to fix anything we needed and at that point it wasn’t worth it.
There’s nothing wrong with having a dream for what you want! You’ll get your perfect home one day. I just got my first property tax bill and it was a very sad day. Noooo goodbye even more money haha

          • May 30, 2019 / 9:16 am

Exactly!! I dont think we could do any of that, it just seems like a waste to pay other people to do it. Not worth it.
Oh I had found my dream home, something I knew we could afford and it got snatched up QUICK! It was literally everything I told you lol. That house is gonna go up in value. But anyway, I was seeing the property taxes on that house and holy shit!! 4 times the monthly rent for a year! Housing is expensive and it’s only gonna get worse from here.

          • June 2, 2019 / 5:06 pm

Oh no too bad it went so fast! Keep checking those listings, it took us about a year of checking the property listings daily to find our dream home.

UGH property taxes are awful! I need to pay mine, I was going to sign up for a monthly payment but they want 6 months in advance which is a lot of money 🙁 And strange considering it’s a “monthly” payment!

          • June 4, 2019 / 7:12 am

6 months in advance? That’s really weird. Even more so because you just moved in too.

          • June 7, 2019 / 2:06 pm

Yeah, it’s apparently because you’re supposed to sign up a year in advance for it or something. It’s so annoying..

  4. May 16, 2019 / 10:57 am

I love this!! I’ve always felt like work comes second to my “real” life because to me, the most important thing is time with loved ones or personal accomplishments/experiences. Of course I love my job, haha, but if I didn’t have to make money, then I wouldn’t choose to have a job at all and I’d spend my whole life doing all the other things. So that prioritizes things for me. 😉
Your list is SO daring and bold, I’m amazed! I mean, repelling down a waterfall?! You’re so brave, lol! I hope you get to check off each and every one! <3
Also, I'd definitely say that if you're working 40+ hours a week, they really need to treat you as a full-time employee with benefits. That's frustrating, I'm sure!

    • May 17, 2019 / 12:28 pm

That’s a great way to live! I need to start prioritizing better. I was so unhappy for most of this year and it finally got to the point where I decided that enough was enough.

Thank you! 🙂 I’ve always wanted to go repelling, it looks so fun! And you have a harness and everything so theoretically it’s safe lol. I hope I can mark off a good chunk of these things!
Yes that was my thinking too. I do at least get benefits but there are other perks of being full time that I don’t get, like premiums for working on my days off and an upgrading payment when I fill in for a higher job classification. But when I told them that I’ve been working 40 hours a week for 5 months they cut my hours down to 32 which I’m very happy about. I have time to live again!

      • May 17, 2019 / 5:59 pm

I’m so glad you have been able to change up your priorities and ask for Fridays off! I hope the rest of the year can be better for you!!

Lol even so, I guess my mind always thinks of worse case scenarios so I’m always paranoid and then I talk myself out of it. I love that you’re so ambitious! It’s inspiring.

Oh good!! I’m glad you at least get benefits, but most of all, I’m so glad they’ve cut you back to 32 hours a week! That sounds so much better.

        • May 20, 2019 / 3:31 pm

          It’s looking up!

You’re also moving halfway across the country, I call that ambitious! We’re all brave in our own ways 🙂

32 is the perfect balance! I have lots of time to blog but am still making enough money.

          • May 21, 2019 / 8:57 am

            Haha, well I guess that’s true! <3

Oh good!! I'm so glad to hear that!! You seem so much happier and less stressed on your blog on Instagram too, so it shows through positively! (Not that you didn't seem happy, or that you only seemed stressed before. But it's just apparent how happy you seem now!) 🙂

          • May 22, 2019 / 8:02 pm

Thank you! I guess it’s true, when I’m less stressed it’s a bit more obvious on my social media haha

These are really awesome things on your list girl! I heard Iceland was so beautiful and I’ve only seen them in pictures but I really want to go myself! I would love to also get a financial advisor because I really need to buckle down and get some financial guidance before I get old and screw myself over because I spent all my money on trivial things haha. Thanks for sharing Cleia! 🥰

    • May 15, 2019 / 4:46 pm

Iceland would be such an adventure! I would love to explore a the waterfalls and hot springs 😊 And the northern lights!

Haha yes that’s my thinking too, I want to be responsible while knowing how much money I can actually spend on travel! Thanks for reading!

  6. May 14, 2019 / 9:23 am

This is such a great list! I understand where you’re coming from with the job issues, I was working 40+ hours a week too and was always too exhausted to do anything else when I was home or on weekends. I wanted to quit more than anything but was too scared, then they let me go and I’ve been the happiest I’ve been in a while cause I feel like I’m living my life and doing all the things I thought about doing when I was at my old company.

The travel section on your list sounds amazing, I’d love to swim with dolphins one day too and go to Iceland. How have you never been to Disneyland though?!? That’s just crazy to me haha😱

Good luck with your book too! I hope you get to cross a lot off this list before you’re 30. 😊

    • May 15, 2019 / 4:44 pm

Thanks Hollie! Yeah I definitely think that the 32 hour workweek gives the best work-life balance. I was recently passed over for a job but now I’m actually relieved. I’m so much happier now that I’m working 32!
I guess sometimes leaving a workplace can be a blessing in disguise, I’m happy you’re making time for all the things you wanted to do!

I knooow Isn’t that crazy!? I’ve been to the San Diego Zoo & Sea world, but that’s the extent of my travels on the USA!

      Thank you! Fingers crossed 🙂

  7. May 14, 2019 / 1:04 am

I love seeing what else is on people’s lists! You definitely sound braver than me! I may have asked you this before but what’s your book about? x

    • May 15, 2019 / 4:38 pm

My sense of adventure is strong 😄 My book is a fantasy adventure! It’s about a group of thieves trying to overthrow a kingdom, with a bit of magic thrown it 🙂

  8. May 13, 2019 / 8:28 pm

I hate, hate, hate “internet speak” but I’m going to put that aside to say…YOLO! We all need to work hard for what we have and what we want, but there has to be more to life than work. So I completely agree with your sentiments in this post!

Ohh I’m so intrigued by the book you mentioned you want to write! Is it fiction, non-fiction, or something else? That would be such an amazing achievement! I used to work in book publishing so I know how much work goes into it!

    • May 15, 2019 / 4:36 pm

I think this is one place where YOLO fits, even though I hate it too 🤣 It just seems depressing to do the 9-5 for 40 years before finally travelling. Like will I even be capable of hiking a Mountain when I’m 60?? I want to have those experiences now, while I’m able!

My book is fantasy! It’s a thieves/heist/magic novel. I hope I can find time to work on it 🙂 That’s so cool you worked in publishing! How did you get into that?

      • May 15, 2019 / 8:00 pm

I much prefer “work hard, play hard” rather than YOLO, but you get the idea! 😆😉 I used to work with a lot with Europeans, and I envied how they thought about the work/life balance. Taking 3 weeks to a month off in the summer, actually going out and having a sit-down lunch during a workday so you clear your head, etc. I always felt that I had to work non-stop to get ahead, it’s exhausting. We all need to money to live yes, but we also need to feed our souls too!

I was an insane reader & lover of books back in the day (I still read but sadly not nearly as much as I used to), so when I graduated from school I was like, I wanna work with books! Thought at first I wanted to be an editor, but then I ended up going into international sales. I now do freelance consulting in the industry, which gives me freedom to move around (and blog, of course 😊).

        • May 17, 2019 / 12:22 pm

Yeah they definitely have different work standards! I’ve heard that Sweden & Switzerland are some of the best places to live for healthcare & work life balance and I believe it!
That’s really cool! I love hearing about what everyone’s jobs are outside of blogging. And it’s nice you still have the freedom to be blogging. Hopefully you still take time for yourself now & then!

          • May 18, 2019 / 10:36 am

Yes, Scandinavia is supposedly an amazing place to live (except I guess during the winter!). Taxes are high but the government at least takes care of you with healthcare, maternity leave, etc. It’s definitely high on my list of places to visit!

If I worked full-time in an office like I used to, I would never be able to keep up with the blog as much as I do now. Who knows, in the future things may change, but for the moment I’m really enjoying making my own schedule! But there’s a little misconception when you work for yourself. People think, oh it must be so easy, but it’s definitely not. I probably work more hours now than I did when I was in an office! Go figure.

          • May 20, 2019 / 3:12 pm

haha yeah it’s probably quite cold. I wouldn’t mind higher taxes if it meant our social services would be better. It’s better than here where our city spends millions of dollars on stupid projects that nobody asked for lol

It’s tough! When I work 40 hours a week I’m so busy that I’m too exhausted for blogging. And 9-5 really eats up all the best lighting for taking blog photos 🙁 I’m glad that you’re enjoying your schedule right now! I believe it, self employment is a TON of work! I was a production event contractor for a year and it’s busy. There are pros & cons.

          • May 21, 2019 / 6:38 pm

At least the days are getting longer now so there’s more sunlight to take photos in! Winter is the worst 😒

          • May 22, 2019 / 8:26 pm

            Yes that’s true!

  9. May 13, 2019 / 3:44 pm

I want to go to Iceland too! Mainly to see the Northern Lights and I also want to go star-gazing. Those 2 are major ones that I’d like to complete before 30.

I would love to go to Disneyland again. Me and my friends always suggest it but never actually end up going. One day we’ll probably end up going with our kids at this rate… 😂😂😂 I did go to Disneyland Paris before but it seemed like a really short trip as it was only for the day so it felt like it was only in passing.

May I ask more about you re-learning everything from your First Year Music Diploma?

    • May 15, 2019 / 4:32 pm

I hope you’re able to go someday! I haven’t seen the northern lights in so long, I’d love to see then again. We do get them in Canada but they’re supposed to be spectacular in Iceland!

I think we’re going to go this year! It’s crazy how many Disneyland’s there are all over the world now. You definitely need to go back 🙂

      • May 16, 2019 / 4:51 am

Ah yes! I heard through another Canadian internet friend that you can see the Northern Lights in Canada! I found that quite astonishing. I am not surprised though – I find Canadian cityscapes and landscapes really nice!

        • May 17, 2019 / 12:24 pm

You can! I’ve heard it’s way better up north. We can’t really see them in the city but if you drive out to the rural areas you can. My grandparents lived on farms so I remember seeing them on drives home at night.

    • May 15, 2019 / 4:33 pm

Oh and for my music diploma I took the program 5 years ago but because I moved out into an apartment I stopped playing (too noisy for the neighbors). So I’d love to pick it up again and start playing jazz and doing scales!

      • May 16, 2019 / 4:53 am

What instrument did you play out of interest? I used to play the piano – still know how to but didn’t keep up with it when I moved away for university! I wish I was more strict on myself in practicing scales!!

        • May 17, 2019 / 12:25 pm

I played guitar! We had to do a tiny bit of piano but I could never play a real song. I just knew some scales lol
It’s never too late to pick it back up!

  10. May 13, 2019 / 12:59 pm

this is such an amazing list! i like that you broke it down into categories 💛 & i love what you said about being intentional about living life to the fullest!

    • May 15, 2019 / 4:30 pm

Thank you!! Yes it’s something that I definitely haven’t been doing and I don’t want my “somedays” to become Nevers. And your 20s are supposed to be about exploring and new experiences, so it’s time to start!

      • May 16, 2019 / 1:16 pm

oh i LOVE that, don’t let your somedays become nevers 💛

  11. May 13, 2019 / 10:09 am

I love your list! I have “swimming with dolphins” on my list too, I’ve wanted to do that my entire life! I’m so putting “spa experience” on my list, though…I need that in my life, haha!

You have such a well-rounded list and a great assortment of goals! Like you said, doing all 30 in the next four years is tough, but at least you’ll be mindfully thinking about them and how you can go about achieving them! Oh my gosh, you need to go to Disneyland and Harry Potter World. Disneyland is seriously the happiest place in the world (if you don’t go during busy season…lol). We went to Orlando with two of our friends a few years ago, and my friends were saying how they wished they took a video of my reaction when we stepped into Diagonal Alley lol. Straight up MAGICAL!

I hope you’re able to someday! 🐬 I definitely want to go on more tropical vacations 🙂 And yes you must! I’m sure there are some great spas in Calgary that you wouldn’t need to travel far for. My mom treated me to a spa day a few years ago with a facial and Mani/pedi and it was amazing, I’ve been meaning to do it again.

I’m planning on checking Disney Land off my list this year in November! I’d also love to go to all the theme parks in Orlando, I could spend a week just wandering. I want to see Diagon alley so bad!

I’ve barely ever visited tropical places! Hawaii…that’s it. I think that’s why I’m drawn to them! Yes, there are definitely some great spas here…I have to do some research! I hope you get your spa retreat soon 😉

Oooh I’m so jealous! I’ve been to Disneyland but never California Adventure, nor the Harry Potter land in LA’s Universal. You definitely need at least a week to explore the Orlando parks, there are SO many of them!

I’ve only been to Hawaii & the Dominican Republic! I don’t travel much haha. But you’ve also been to Japan which is #goals 🙂
I hope so too! I’m taking my mom to get a pedicure with me for a belated mother’s Day gift so that counts!

I haven’t been to either, I want to visit both! I haven’t even heard of California Adventure, I need to do some research asap!

California Adventure is Disney’s other park in Anaheim, the entrances are literally right across from each other! Let me know if you need some tips before you go, I’m a Disney park nerd haha. It’ll be nice if you go in November…if you go in the later half of November, you’ll get to see their Christmas decorations up!

I also forgot to mention, so brave of you to do a solo trip! It sounds like an amazing idea but I’m such a chicken, I honestly don’t even know if I could go to Edmonton by myself haha.

Oooh Christmas lights! We’re going the third week of November, would that be too early?

I’ve been reading theblondeabroad, she writes a ton of female solo travel guides and it’s really inspiring! I think it would be cool to do an organized group tour as a solo traveller too, then I’d get to meet new people and still feel like I’m travelling on my own.

          • May 23, 2019 / 5:06 pm

They start putting the Christmas decor up around the second week of November, so you should be able to catch it! It’s so magical 😭 you will love it!

I’ll have to check her blog out! Even if I can’t go on my own, at least I can live vicariously through her! An organized tour as a solo traveler sounds more doable… no risk of me getting myself lost 😂

It sounds magical! We just had a change of plans though, and I’m bummed I’ll miss the Christmas lights now 🙁 My In-laws just asked us to stay with them in Hawaii for a week in December and they said they’ll pay for our flights with air-miles. We couldn’t say no but it was one or the other! We’ll have to do Disney next year now. Darn!

A group tour is a great way to start! And the other nice thing about it is that you don’t need to do any of the planning. I micro-plan all of my travels from where we stay to what we do and eat so being on a group tour was actually so relaxing because I just followed along and didn’t have to worry about any of that stuff!

Aww, Hawaii will be just as amazing, just a different type of fun from Disneyland! Plus you won’t have to pay for the flight, haha! You’ll have Disneyland to look forward to next year 🙂

Exactly, that’s kind of why we’re looking into doing group tours, cause we’re kind of exhausted from planning. There’s definitely pros and cons to planning your own trip vs doing tours!

yes! They had me at the word “free” haha But we definitely still want to see Disneyland someday!

Planning is exhausting sometimes! I hope you will be able to travel lots in the next 5 years!
