Revisiting Ipsy: The 2020 January Ipsy Glam Bag

It had been ages since I last talked about Ipsy on my blog! You guys, Ipsy has really grown up since I last featured the popular makeup subscription on my blog. I started Always, Cleia in 2016 and my first beauty post was an Ipsy review. I left Ipsy in 2018 for a couple of reasons…

*Note: This post contains my Ipsy referral link.*

Ipsy Clean Slate January Glam Bag 2020

Why I Unsubscribed from Ipsy

First of all, most of you probably know that I’m Canadian. Ipsy is Available in the USA and Canada, but of course Canadians paid an extra $4.95 for shipping. That’s cool, I get it! But what I didn’t understand was why did US subscribers had a whole other component to their subscription: Ipsy shopper and Ipsy offers. I paid the same thing as US subscribers and wasn’t getting the same value.

Secondly, the points reward system sucked. They were charging six months worth of points for sample size products and it felt like a waste to me.

So I wandered away and tried other subs like Fabfitfun and Boxycharm. But at the start of 2020 I really started missing the classic glam bag: deluxe sample sizes that I could actually finish in a month or two! I still love trying new makeup, but I hate products going to waste. If you saw my final project pan update for 2019 you’d know that I did horribly on my project, so smaller sizes are better for me.

January 2020 Ipsy Glam Bag Review

the new ipsy

I’m really glad that I resubscribed, because it seems that in my absence Ipsy made some changes. I knew that they had added on several tiers to their subscription, Glam Bag Plus and Glam Bag Ultimate, but I didn’t know that they had opened Ipsy shopper and deals to Canadian subscribers! I feel  better about my subscription when I’m treated the same as everyone else. Additionally you can now shop full sizes of the products in your glam bag at a discount through Ipsy Shopper.

Their points reward system now contains mostly full sized products, but they are a bit overpriced IMO, unless you’re reviewing the Ultimate glam bag and referring a lot of new people your points will build slowly.

Another feature of the new glam blag is that you now have a bi-monthly subscription option and you can skip months if you aren’t liking the spoilers. As someone who often subscribes, cancels and resubscribes from Boxycharm this skip function is real helpful!

So what’s in the January Ipsy Glam Bag?

Ipsy January 2020

the bag

I wish that there was an option to opt out of receiving a physical bag. After a few months of Ipsy you couldn’t possibly need more! I still have three or four unused bags around the house.

The marble design on the January Ipsy Glam Bag is sooo nice though! This bag is right up my alley, unlike the awful neon green and mesh gym shoe bag of January 2018. *Yes, I know that it’s February already… I signed up in late January and Ipsy now uses DHL shipping which takes forever to ship anywhere in Canada*

January 2020 Ipsy Glam Bag

the products

I got three deluxe samples and two full sizes in my January Glam Bag. One of the full sizes is a makeup brush though so I don’t know that it really counts as full sized? It’s a Luxie brush, and one that I don’t already have so I’m pretty happy with it!

Too Faced Hangover Primer from Ipsy

Too Faced Hangover Primer

I’ve been reviewing makeup for four years and can you believe I’ve never tried this makeup primer before? I generally don’t splurge on primer so even though Too Faced Hangover has been recommended to me I just haven’t shelled out the money for it.

Even though this tube is very tiny I don’t mind. I have a Cover FX Primer from the June 2018 Boxycharm that I’m still working on plus a few travel sizes already so I’m ok with a small sample to see if Too Faced Hangover is something I like.

This primer contains coconut water and claims to smooth, soften, promote elasticity and boost radiance. We shall see!

Pür 4 in 1 mineral makeup

Pür 4 in 1 Pressed Mineral Makeup with SPF 15

Oh Pür cosmetics… the brand that I never buy but always see in subscription boxes. I want to give Pür a second chance, but I still remember quite clearly the awful Boxycharm Pür Collaboration palette. UGH. It was terrible.

From talking to other beauty enthusiasts I’ve come to the conclusion that I really should try them again, and maybe a collaboration isn’t the best thing to judge them on.

I love that this pressed powder/foundation contains SPF, I’ve been bad about wearing SPF this winter so having it in my makeup products makes it easier for me!

Do you guys want a review on this powder once I’ve tried it for a few weeks? Let me know!

Ipsy Luxie 560 Fan Brush

Luxie Beauty 560 Medium Fan Brush

I’ve wanted a fan brush for so long, and even better that it’s Luxie!! Luxie makes amazing brushes. My personal favorite is the 660 brush. I have two of them, one for under eye setting powder and one for highlighter. I actually discovered Luxie beauty for the first time in the May 2017 Glam Bag. That was so long ago, I can’t believe I’ve had that brush for almost three years!

I can’t wait to give this a shot!

*this brush is full sized and retails for $18USD*

Context Skin Liquid Lacquer Mad Love

Context Skin Liquid Lacquer

The name of this product makes me think of nail polish, I don’t know why they used Lacquer instead of Lipstick. The finish is somewhere between creme lipstick and lipgloss.

I received the shade Mad Love, which I wasn’t super excited about. This is a very generic pink and I have two or three lipsticks that resemble this shade already. It especially reminds me of the Calypso Ultra Satin lipstick from Colourpop.

This lipstick contains Vitamin C and E though, so its actually already got more going for it ingredient wise than Colourpop’s lippies 🧐

I thought it was weird that Ipsy made a point to write Non-toxic on the product page. Damn straight it better be non-toxic, that’s a given!

*this lipstick is full sized and retails for $24USD*

Banila Co Clean It Zero Cleansing Balm Ipsy

Banila Co Clean it Zero Cleansing Balm

I’ve mentioned before that I am not really a fan of cleansing balms. The only one that I tolerate is the Good Molecules cleansing balm which I reviewed this month. Know that I received it in PR if that sort of thing bothers you, but I really did find that it worked better than Green Clean and the Clinique cleansing balm.

These kind of balms are nice during the winter if you have dry skin like me, so this is a product that will probably get used up this season. Plus if I use this Banila Co Cleansing Balm I can hoard my Good Molecules balm like a a crazy person, cherishing it but never finishing it because I’m “saving” it 😂

Ipsy January Glam Bag 2020

What you do you think of Ipsy?

I am pleasantly surprised with the products in my January Ipsy Glam Bag. I appreciate all the strives they have made to add value to my subscription, and even if I never use Ipsy shopper I’m happy that it’s available to me. The only annoying thing is how long it will take to build enough points to redeem a reward, but that’s pretty minor.

Let me know if you enjoyed this post. Remember to follow this blog and my social media! ttyl x @alwayscleia

I miss Ipsy and any beauty sub really, but I’m gonna hold out a bit longer on buying things I dont need lol.
I loooove the bag though, when I first saw someone else receiving I was like “whoa I want it” and I almost did lol. I do like the changes they made and I’m glad Canadian customers get to reap the same benefits as US consumers because it just isnt fair, especially when you pay more.
You got lots of great little samples. Enjoy!

Oh my gosh, that marble bag just has Gen Z written all over it am I right? 😂 But I still love it and I’m definitely not a part of that generation so…

Glad you’re happy with your items! I still feel my subscription days are behind me, but I never say never!

Glad you’re happy with everything! The marble bag is a nice pattern 🙂 I hope you like the Hangover primer from Too Faced, I tried it a year or so ago and it was pretty good, I’d consider picking it up again in future. I’ve never used a fan brush before but I know they are meant to be great for applying highlighter! That lip colour is pretty too!

I’ve been back and forth on trying a subscription service of some kind, but I always talk myself out of it! My skin is so picky about products, so it almost doesn’t seem worth it if I’m risking skincare or makeup that I might not even be able to use. I hope this round goes much better for you!!

That’s completely understandable. It would be frustrating getting products that you knew you couldn’t use. And there will always be a few things that just don’t work for you in a subscription so I see why a lot of people would rather just buy the full sizes of what they actually want! Thank you for reading 💕

My sister used to have an ipsy bag a few years back, and I felt like I didn’t like the idea of getting so many minis? I guess I’m just a full sized girl! I think I’d prefer to spend $10 on a full size product that I’ll get more use out of the products. I felt like when I had birchbox, I had the same issue? I still can’t wait to hear your thoughts on the products though! xxx

I do love the value of Boxycharm, and I think maybe for a short term subscription it would be better. But I really missed getting to try new things without product sitting on my shelves unused. I guess I’ll see how I feel in a few months! I’m excited about the hangover primer 😊

that makes sense. can’t wait to hear your thoughts on it! x

I haven’t had an Ipsy subscription bag in years. I used to love them too but totally agree that the point system didn’t ever seem worth it or the rewards were always gone before you could get them. Then went completely cruelty free and ended up unsubscribing from all the subscription services since it didn’t seem right.
