Sephora Haul | Skincare & Makeup

Hey everyone!! If you’ve been following me on instagram and watch my stories you’ll already know that I was finally able to break away from my no-buy for a day or two because I received some belated birthday money. I wasn’t expecting anything so I was really surprised. With the house purchase looming one week away and our massive downpayment about to leave our bank accounts I’ve been super insistent on not spending money beyond what we need to pay bills and buy food.

It’s been hard but it was also a good exercise in self control. I was starting to get a little too spendy for my own liking at the end of 2018 so the cold turkey no-buy has been good for me. After two months of not making any purchases beyond the necessities it was really nice to give myself a free pass to spend my birthday money guilt free. I picked up a few skincare products I’ve been meaning to try from Sephora as well as a new collab from one of my favourite YouTubers! Unfortunately the collab products haven’t arrived yet so you’ll have to wait until next week. It should be here by then… I hope…

Sephora Skincare Haul

My first Sephora Haul of the year!

This haul is pretty small but I still wanted to share the products I got so you guys know what reviews to expect from me soon. I love that Sephora sells The Ordinary (again), which is probably the most affordable brand to ever sit on their shelves. Unfortunately the brand is only sold online and not in stores. I picked up one of The Ordinary’s very affordable skincare products, a not-so affordable product from Tarte, a makeup product and a free deluxe mini. Let’s start with the most expensive product.

Tarte Rainforest Of The Sea Deep Sea Collagen Super Serum

Tarte Cosmetics Deep Sea Collagen Super Serum

This collagen serum from the Tarte Rainforest of the Sea collection retails fro $47CAD. It isn’t nearly as expensive as products from Tatcha, Drunk Elephant, etc… But it’s a lot of money to spend on a skincare product without having tried it first.

The clinical results of this serum sounded promising though, as did all the reviews on Sephora. My face looks to me like it’s aged 5 years this winter. My husband says I’m crazy and look the same but I can definitely see texture and fine lines that weren’t there in the Summer! I’m hoping that this serum will help re-hydrate my skin and restore it to it’s former glory. I’ll let you know how it goes. The bottle is gorgeous!

The Ordinary Vitamin C 23% + HA Spheres 2%

The Ordinary Vitamin C 23% + HA Spheres 2%

Vitamin C has anti-aging and firming properties.ย  I’m a little nervous to try this product because most vitamin C (L-Absorbic Acid) products contain only a 5 – 15% concentration. I’ve read that higher amounts of it can cause discomfort and irritation so I’m going to goย very slow with this product.

According to the ordinary “A very strong tingling but non-irritating sensation is expected during the first 1-2 weeks of use until the skin’s tolerance to such high exposure is elevated. If the sensation is too strong to tolerate, the formula can be mixed on each application with other creams or serums of your preference.”

I will also have to let you know how this product works out for me. It was only $5 something so if it doesn’t work out I won’t be overly disappointed. Now let’s move onto the makeup!

Morphe Eyelid Primer

Morphe Eyelid Primer

The Morphe Eyelid Primer was the most inexpensive eyeshadow primer that I could find at Sephora. This tube is full sized and retailed for $13CAD, as opposed to $28.50 for the Urban Decay Primer potion that I love. The Primer potion only contains 0.03oz more than the Morphe primer so this one is a much better deal. Does it work though? That will be the real test of if I got a bargain or not. Creasing and fading eyeshadow is the worst, so I really hope that Morphe’s Eyelid Primer holds up!

I wasn’t the biggest fan of the Morphe 35M Boss Mood Artistry Palette that I reviewed a while back so I’m curious to see if the shadows will perform any better with Morphe’s own primer.

Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Flawless Finish Setting Powder

Hold up, wasn’t CT in my 2019 Beauty Brand Anti-Haul? Why yes it was! However, I didn’t actually spend money on this CT setting powder. This is a mini that came free with my order and there was only one other product I could have chosen. Has anybody noticed that Sephora used to have a TON of beauty offer deluxe minis and now there are only ever one or two at a time?

My reason for including Charlotte Tilbury on my anti-haul list was because of how expensive her products are, so I don’t mind trying one for free. I have nothing against the brand other than the prices not fitting my budget!

Oddly enough this is the shadeย Medium and it works pretty well for my fair skintone. How strange! A lot of reviews on Sephora were saying that this powder oxidizes and turned their skin orange… but I haven’t noticed that at all. It’s not a bad powder, but it’s pricey for what it is.

Sephora Beauty Haul

What have you bought at Sephora or any other beauty retailer lately?

As I said, this is a pretty small haul. I’m still trying to save money and I just ordered some products from the ColourPop Spring Collection so I had to keep this one small. The April VIB sale should be coming up soon though, and I’ve already chosen a few products that I’d like to add to my collection. Stay tuned for my elf haul, ColourPop haul, and my VIB sale haul in April/May! Thanks for reading x

I’ll be interested to hear how that Tarte serum works for you! I love to use serums, but I don’t love ANOTHER thing to buy lol.

I have heard that Vitamin C can be rendered ineffective when exposed to air, so it is best to find products that have packaging where air exposure is none to minimal. Hopefully the squeezy tube is good enough for that!

I really like it so far! My skin has definitely improved since I started using it but that could also be because it went from minus 20 to above zero in the span of 2 weeks. It’s hard to say ๐Ÿค”

I haven’t heard that, oh no! I’ve also heard that depending on what you mix it with the Vitamin C can become less effective. I should have gone into dermatology, I wish I knew the best way to use it!

You got so amazing goodies, and I can’t believe that I have never tried any of these products! I can’t wait to see your thoughts on them! xxx

Great little haul and I love that you were able to have some birthday money to spend, as you say, guilt free.
You got some good stuff I do want to buy some Ordinary products too I just hate that it’s all online as well lol. One day, one day.
Hopefully that primer works well for their palette, can’t wait to see if it makes a difference.

Guilt free shopping is the best!
I wish the ordinary wasn’t only online too, because then I always end up spending more to get free shipping.
I haven’t had a chance to try it with my morphe shadows but it’s been doing a good job with my colourpop shadows! No creasing or fading at the end of the day ๐Ÿ™‚

Love this! When I was looking into a face cream I was thinking about The Ordinary one, but went with Kiehl’s. I am looking forward to seeing what you think of this product from The Ordinary and the face serum!

That Tarte serum looks amazing! I feel the same way about my skin as well, my skin has been so dry lately and I definitely need to do a face mask or something haha! That mini CT product looks beautiful! Such a great haul x

I’ve noticed my skin looks older too from this Michigan winter! I’m glad I’m not just imagining it haha I’ve been on a bit of a low/no buy myself, I go to the dentist this week and as I don’t have insurance, I want to know how much that is going to cost. I do have a wishlist waiting for me, though! My birthday is coming up just in time for the VIP sale and I plan on getting the Drunk Elephant Rise + Glow Duo from Sephora to help rehydrate my skin. DE products are crazy expensive, but my skin is very picky and reacts very well to them.

I look forward to seeing your ColourPop haul! They are a new favorite of mine!

Winter does awful things to our skin! I need to go live in Costa Rica where it’s always hot & humid haha
aww no! I hope your dental bill isn’t too bad. I thankfully have dental in my work benefits but they sometimes make me pay out of pocket and then I have to resubmit for coverage. That initial payment sucks!
The Sephora sale is the perfect time to pick up some DE products. They’re not cheap but from what I hear they work. I hope it does exactly what you want it to!

I can’t wait to share my haul when it arrives. Thanks for reading! x

Love the Ordinary but I’ll second the cautionary advice. I ended up buying the normal moisturizer with just HA and mixing the vitamin C half and half. It also cut the grainy texture down a ton.

Also – new blog fan here! Love the photography, your reviews and the honesty and integrity! Thank you for what you do.

Polished & Inspired recommended that to me too, mixing the vitamin C definitely helps with the texture!

Thank you so much Molly! xx

When I did my no-buy last year, I allowed myself to spend money for my birthday and from a gift card I won, as long as I was consciously buying things I needed/wanted and didn’t already have already. I succeeded once and failed the second time, but it’s good to not beat yourself up and just be aware of what you’re buying. Good luck with the house hunt!

Gift cards are the best when you’re on a tight budget! I don’t always succeed on my low/no buys either, but it’s good to be aware of your goals. Thanks Danielle! x

I love me some miniโ€™s! Thatโ€™s why I always get caught in the โ€˜aisle of doomโ€™ leading up to the cashier ๐Ÿ˜†. Iโ€™ve gone to Sephora many a time just to look at the miniโ€™s. Iโ€™m curious to hear about the Morphe primer after youโ€™ve used it!

omg the “aisle of doom”! I love that haha
It’s so hard to resist those minis though. I’ll update on the primer soon, hopefully on instagram once I find it again. All my makeup got jumbled in the move haha

      • March 26, 2019 / 8:54 am

Hope the move is going well!

  12. March 22, 2019 / 12:13 pm

It’s always great to be able to use gift cards during a no-buy, that way you still get to play with new makeup!
I think I already told you this somewhere else, but that TO Vitamin C Suspension literally burnt my skin the first time I used it, and my entire face flaked for two weeks after that. It felt tingly when I first put it on, but I thought it was normal since the box says it’s supposed to feel like that…nope. I have a review of it here: https://polishedandinspired.wordpress.com/2018/09/18/6-month-update-my-experience-with-the-ordinary-products-part-1/
So, just be careful with it the first time, or really dilute it with a serum until your skin gets used to it. I also hated the grittiness of the product. BUT ultimately I did really enjoy the results it gave.
A mini is a great way to try out a more expensive brand like CT! Bonus points for it being completely free, haha.

eeeek! I forgot about that. I remembered that the Marine Hyaluronics smelled awful and I stayed away from the Hyaluronic Acid because you warned me about it. The first time I used the Vitamin C it gave me a very strong burning/tingling sensation but I didn’t peel or flake after (luckily)! I’ve only used it once since then and it was okay, but I’m mixing it with a moisturizer now to help with the grittiness.
I love getting luxury minis with my orders lol

      • March 26, 2019 / 8:46 pm

I’m glad it’s worked for you so far! I had to mix mine too but I’ve heard it can decrease the effectiveness of the Vit C depending on what you mix it with, so I never knew if I was doing the right thing.

Oh no, hopefully my moisturizer isn’t negating the effects. It’s so hard to know with skincare!

  13. March 22, 2019 / 11:04 am

How fun that you got some birthday money to treat yourself a little! It’s always so fun after having such a tight budget. ๐Ÿ™‚ I have felt the same way about my face this winter! I’ve been noticing so many fine lines and legit wrinkles, not to mention insanely dry skin. O.O And my husband also says he doesn’t see it haha. They can be the sweetest, can’t they? Because I definitely see it on my own face. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Yes!! Normally I would just put any gift money in the bank but I decided what the heck, I’ll treat myself this time.
I hope that it’s just the winter dryness, Maybe in Spring & Summer our skin will bounce back! I know I’m at the age where I’ll actually start noticing those lines though haha. I guess it’s just part of life. How funny that he doesn’t notice them either though!

      • March 26, 2019 / 11:57 am

I think that’s a great idea, especially after a no-buy for so long! Every once in a while, we just need to splurge or we will go crazy later on and spend what we don’t have lol. Or maybe that’s just me haha. ๐Ÿ˜‰

I’m sure it is just the winter dryness! It’s no fun so I’m very excited it’s getting warmer! Hopefully that will help. ๐Ÿ™‚

I hope so! Maybe summer will fix everything ๐Ÿ˜„
