Hello there! It’s been a long time since I wrote a blog post. As I mentioned before my blogging hiatus I was taking a music course and I wanted to give it 110% of my effort. I work full time on top of everything so I knew I wouldn’t be able to handle updating this space as well as working and taking a class. Thanks for your understanding during this time.
My perspective on beauty has totally changed since 2020 thanks to the pandemic. For obvious reasons (masking) I’m no longer wearing foundation or lipstick. My skin has gotten a lot better since I stopped trying to wear foundation, and now when I wear it in addition to a mask I break out. I don’t want to bother with it!
When I do get to see my friends now it feels like such a big deal, but our gatherings have all been backyard hangouts and I’m not really wearing full makeup anymore. Most of my friends don’t wear makeup at all, so I feel overdressed in a sense if I show up to a backyard in a full face. No one is judging me, but I think our habits do change based on the people around us. My beauty routine has definitely changed, so let’s talk Summer favourites. I’ll share some new products I’ve tested and some old favourites.
Summer Favourites 2021
I have some skincare favourites that I’ve been reaching for all summer long. First up is the Paula’s Choice Youth Extending Daily Hydrating Fluid with SPF 50. I am obsessed with this SPF. I’ve been using it daily since last winter. We’ve have had record breaking high temperatures this year but my face & neck haven’t burned or even really tanned this year thanks to this product. One might think that all SPF is the same, but that’s not true at all. Most SPF’s of a 50+ rating are quite thick, but this one from Paula’s Choice has a very fluid consistency which absorbs completely and doesn’t leave a white cast on the skin. Love love love!
I have two face serums on my radar right now. First up is the Ole Henriksen Truth Serum. Truth serum is a vitamin C serum and it smells like oranges! It smells good enough to eat (though I don’t recommend it). I saw brighter skin during the time I was using this serum. I was sad to finish the bottle!
Next up is the Tatcha Dewy Serum. This deluxe sample from Sephora lasted about a week and a half. In that time I loved having this serum in my routine. It’s super hydrating and would be a great addition to my Winter skincare routine. Even in the summer it was great, since it was so dry during our heatwave. It smooths out any texture associated with dryness (ie rough peeling skin) and it has enough hydration that I can use it alone in my night routine. The price is quite the pill to swallow though, so I don’t think I’ll be adding it to my cart anytime soon. Unless I win the lottery that is!
Back to Ole Henriksen, I am obsessed with the Banana Bright Eye Cream. It hydrates really nicely and I prefer vitamin C in my eye creams rather than caffeine. Caffeine just doesn’t work well for me in my skincare, almost every caffeine eye product I’ve tried hasn’t worked out. The Banana Bright Eye Cream also contains yellow pigments to brighten/colour-correct the undereye area. I don’t really notice a change of color on my skin, but I do think my dark circles are less noticeable. I only have the mini size of Banana Bright but it’s lasted me a couple months so far. It’s definitely worth the price for how long it’s lasted!
I discovered cream blush when I received the Milk Makeup Lip + Cheek stick from my Ipsy subscription. I have since cancelled all my beauty subscriptions because I had way too many beauty products accumulating, but I’m glad I discovered this gem before I cancelled.
This is the shade Werk. The colour is gorgeous and flattering on my skin tone, and the formula melts into my skin really nicely whether I apply it with my fingers, a brush or a sponge. I don’t find this blush to be super long lasting, like it won’t go 12 hours in the heat but it also doesn’t emphasize any texture and generally looks really lovely for the 6-8 hours it’s on.
I don’t understand how anyone could possibly need the full size of this blush. This little stick has lasted me such a long time, and you can get most of the shades available as a mini. Yes the value is technically better for the full size in terms of $/g but that only matters if you’re going to finish the whole thing. I see way too many declutter videos where someone has over-consumed and then throws away a ton of half finished products.
While we’re on the topic of cream blush I also wanted to share the Pixi On the Glow Blushes. I received a surprise package from Pixi containing their cream blushes in the Spring, and I was quite surprised! I didn’t realize I was still on their PR list since it’s been a long time since I received a new launch.
These Pixi blushes come in these little rectangular sticks, they remind me of popsicles! I find the shape a little odd tbh, (you get a whole line of blush on your face if you apply it directly from the stick) but it blends out nicely so it’s not a deal breaker. These blushes have a lot of pigment and they don’t sheer out as much as the Milk Makeup blush. The colours are beautiful. Let me know if you have a favourite cream blush you’d like me to try!
I tried a new mascara and I loved it! The Diorshow Mascara is another Luxury product that I wish I hadn’t loved because as Kathleen Lights would say, “das esspensive”. This is my first ever product from Dior and I wasn’t expecting to like, let alone love a new mascara. I don’t mind mascara, but most mascaras perform the same on my eyelashes. I honestly have a hard time discerning the difference between drugstore and high end mascaras, they usually aren’t very different. My eyelashes are stubborn, short and straight and typically don’t curl so I was excited when I saw how much lift my eyelashes got from this mascara without curling my lashes beforehand. The brush is pretty large, so I have to be careful not to get mascara all over my eyeballs. But when I’m careful the effect is really nice!
Last month I ordered the Kaja Gloss Shots set from Sephora. The set contained contained two of their gloss shot lipglosses. The value of the set was really good. It was actually a better value to buy the set than to buy a full sized gloss! I have a review coming your way of these glosses very soon. They’re comfortable and emolient and I don’t leave home without them! Stay tuned for my review 😉
Neutral Eyeshadow Palettes
I don’t really create elaborate makeup looks anymore. I still wear eyeshadow but I tend to stick to neutral palettes. A couple favourites that have been in my rotation lately have been the ColourPop Going Coconuts palette as well as the Too Faced Natural Love palette. Both palettes contain those staple neutral shadows that can be used for a full look or to tie a more colourful eyeshadow look together.
I’ve actually started giving away some of my ColourPop palettes to friends, such as the All that Palette which was way too pink & red for my personal taste. Maybe I’ll wear more colours in the future but for the time being it’s neutrals.
What are you loving in the beauty world this Summer?
Thanks for reading! Let me know if you’re loving anything new or old this summer. Hope you are all doing well, take care of yourselves out there x
