Tarte Make A Splash Hydrating Skin Savers – Worth it, or Not?

Happy Monday Loves, last Monday I shared with you guys my Summer Sephora Haul. It was mainly a stock up on some products I had run out of, but I also wanted to try out the Tarte Rainforest of the Sea Collection. Sephora has so many great value sets at the moment, it was hard to pick just one! I ended up with the Tarte Make a Splash Hydrating Skin Savers value set. So did it end up being worth my money? Let’s find out!

Tarte Make A Splash Hydrating Skin Savers

It’s all smooth sailing from here! Take the plunge into tarte’s deluxe discovery set with these Rainforest of the Sea skincare necessities:

  • cleanse & clarify with deep dive cleansing gel
  • prime & refresh with marine boosting 4-in-1 mist
  • hydrate & defend with a drink of H2O hydrating boost

According to Sephora, the Deep Dive Cleaning Gel (0.25oz) removes “all traces of waterproof makeup” and brightens skin. The Marine Boosting Mist (0.33oz) can be used as a primer, setting spray, hydrating mist, and skin refresher (aren’t these last two the same thing!?). Drink H20 Hydrating Boost (0.24oz) is a gel moisturizer for dry/dehydrated skin, and apparently “supports the replenishment of electrolytes”.

First Impressions

Deep Dive Cleansing Gel

The first thing I noticed about the cleanser was that it didn’t have a pump to dispense the gel. I hadn’t realized that it wouldn’t have some sort of dispenser so this was frustrating. Have any of you tried to get the last bit of lotion or shampoo out of a mini hotel toiletry bottle? That’s what using this is like. Below you can see how runny it is in the swatch!

The second thing I noticed was the smell. At first it reminded me of menthol, but then it had a strange undercurrent to it that I did not like on my face. Honestly… the scent reminds me of a porta-pottie, or the chemicals they put it them. UGH. I know that’s horrible to say, but that’s really what the scent makes me think of.

Deep Dive didn’t foam on my face and it felt slippery. Even after rinsing my face three times I didn’t feel like I had got the gel off. My face felt clean afterwards though, so it did it’s job. In terms of removing waterproof makeup or brightening, I didn’t really notice much of an effect. I still had to swab off my eye makeup afterwards.

Marine Boosting 4-in-1 Mist

Aside from the fact that I believe being a Hydrating Mist and a Skin Refresher are the same things, I was pleasantly surprised with this mist. Since it is also good for use as a setting spray I expected it to leave my skin tacky, but it didn’t at all! I’ve been using it after my moisturizer and to set my makeup and I’ve been very pleased with the results.

With dry skin I’m not really someone who absolutely needs to use a face primer all the time, but applying it after my moisturizer really seemed to lock in the hydration. It’s been especially nice with these hot summer days to have a face spritzer on hand as a refresh. This mist doesn’t have any of the weird smell I noted in the Deep Dive Cleanser. I really like the smell, it’s fresh and not at all minty!

I am also happy with the actual packaging. Some product spritzers send a tiny jet of product at your face which is awful, while others don’t dispense enough. This spritzer dispenses a fine, floaty mist. It also doesn’t make mascara run!

Drink of H20 Hydrating Boost

This is a gel moisturizer. If you don’t like gel, this isn’t going to impress you. I personally love gel moisturizers, so this was right up my alley. You can see the consistency swatched below. First things first, you only need a tiny bit of product to cover your entire face & neck. Second, this left my skin feeling slightly sticky. I don’t especially like that in a moisturizer, but it was only a slight amount of tackiness which went away after applying my makeup so I can get past it.

Drink of H20 is also supposed to be good for uneven texture in your skin, which I don’t have too much of so I can’t really vouch to it’s effectiveness in that area. It also claims to plump fine lines, but again, the only place I have fine lines is around my eyes, and I use an eye cream to target those. My face did feel hydrated all day long using this though! Because of the tackiness I prefer to use it as a night time moisturizer.

Let’s Talk Value

If you read my original haul post, you probably already know what I think about the value. However, for those who haven’t read the post I will recap. Sephora had this exclusive set priced for $12, with a $28 value in brackets. I rather blindly believed this and was like wow, what a great deal!

When I calculated the values myself using the full size products as a reference however, I came up with a value of $1.50 for the Deep Dive Cleansing Gel, $3 for the Marine Mist, and $6.58 for the moisturizer, which totals $11.08!! UNDER the value I paid, and WAY under Sephora’s supposed $28 value. I redid my calculations referencing the smaller, more expensive travel sizes of these products that Sephora had available and came up with a value of $14.06. Still way off from $28, but over the $12 for the set.

Worth it, or Not?

So is it worth it? Well, if I had bought the travel sized Deep Dive gel for $15 and discovered that I really didn’t like it I would have been rather upset. However, I could have returned it so that’s not that big of a deal. I really liked the marine mist and using the cleanser before bed. I will definitely be picking up the travel or full size of the mist so I’m glad that I got the set if only for the purpose that I discovered a new product that I love. The moisturizer is too expensive for me with a full size bottle going for $47, but it’s nice to try high end skin care once and a while.

As a first time user of Tarte skincare, the purchase was worth it for me. If you are already familiar with the Rainforest of the Sea Collection, I say Don’t buy this set, buy what you already know you like full sized because the deluxe minis aren’t worth it for more than trying it out as a first time user.

What do you think of the Rainforest of the Sea Collection? Did you buy the Tarte Make A Splash value set?

Thanks for reading everyone! This post was really fun to write and I hope that you guys liked reading it too! Let me know if value sets are a post you like to see reviewed, and I wish you all a lovely week! Remember to follow me on Instagram & Twitter

I HATED that cleansing gel, all the things you said held true for me as well!

    • August 24, 2017 / 5:33 pm

I haven’t really heard a good review on the cleansing gel yet, everyone I talked to has kind of said the same thing! It’s a shame, I really hoped I’d like it.

  2. August 23, 2017 / 12:40 am

I have been very interested in trying that moisturizer for a while, but it is definitely on the more expensive side.. maybe I should try this set. Thanks for the review!

    • August 23, 2017 / 12:37 pm

It is expensive huh? This might be a good set for you to try it out! Alternatively you could go to Sephora and ask them to mix you a sample of the moisturizer if you aren’t interested in the other 2 products. xx

      • August 23, 2017 / 1:06 pm

You’re right, I should go ask for a sample. I always forget to do that with skin care, whereas with foundations etc I am all over the samples lol.

        • August 23, 2017 / 1:37 pm

I always feel a little bit awkward asking for samples, but the staff are usually more than happy to do it. I got them to make me a little pot of tarte maracuja concealer, and they actually gave me so much product, I was surprised. Go get those samples!!

          • August 23, 2017 / 3:00 pm

Haha yes! And I know that you are allowed 3 per visit, so gotta maximize that.

          • August 23, 2017 / 3:59 pm

Is it only three? I thought it was three for each area, ie skincare, makeup and fragrance. either way, I don’t think I’d bother them for more than a couple!

          • August 23, 2017 / 4:00 pm

WHAT OMG. If that were true I would lose my shit, but I’m pretty sure it’s just 3 total.

          • August 23, 2017 / 4:00 pm

All you have to do is go up to different cast members and get samples from them too discreetly lol

          • August 23, 2017 / 4:04 pm

I think I read that it was 9 on a blog somewhere haha. I’ll need to see how many I can get next time I’m in store!

          • August 23, 2017 / 4:04 pm

I follow a girls blog on here who works at Sephora, I’ll ask her lol

          • August 23, 2017 / 4:16 pm

Cool! Please let me know what she says I’m so curious!

          • August 23, 2017 / 8:21 pm

Ok i got her answer. It’s in the comments of my blog post from today. The too faced sweetheart bronzer

          • August 23, 2017 / 8:54 pm

Awesome I’ll check it out! 😁

  3. August 21, 2017 / 9:42 pm

Great review! I had pretty much the same thoughts as you on this trio. I didn’t like the cleansing gel but I loved the other two! The cleansing gel was so annoying to get all the product out like you said! I feel like a lot went to waste and it was so tiny to begin with. The smell wasn’t the most pleasant either.

I haven’t used the spray a lot but it’s so nice and I’m loving the moisturizer. It’s so expensive though! I really like gel moisturizers. They’re so light which I love!

This is definitely only worth it for people who haven’t tried any of these products out before. I can’t believe Sephora lists $28 as the value! That’s why I love when bloggers break down values because it’s hard to trust retailers sometimes!

    • August 21, 2017 / 10:40 pm

I really thought I would like the cleanser, I was surprised how much I didn’t. I am glad that I liked the other two though, I used the spray today before work and then right before the gym in the evening and my makeup didn’t budge!

I have no idea where the $28 value comes from. It’s so weird that it’s not even close!

      • August 22, 2017 / 11:14 am

I thought I would like it too. I even asked for it in last month’s Ipsy bag so now I have 2 lol. I’m glad the spray works so well!

        • August 22, 2017 / 1:53 pm

oh no!! At least it’s small so it shouldn’t take a long time to use up haha!

  4. August 21, 2017 / 6:27 pm

I like that you broke down the cost, often value sets are worth the money if you like most of the products but some just aren’t because there are products you don’t like or won’t work for you and then it seems like a waste. I like the Sephora favourite kits though, I always find them worth their price!

    • August 21, 2017 / 7:02 pm

Thanks for commenting!! I like that the Sephora favourites kits often feature lots of different brands, and sometimes the values really are great like the lashstash kits that include a voucher for a full size of your favourite product! I think it’s just good to keep an eye on what the kit actually offers in terms of products and sizes. Thanks for stopping by =)

  5. August 21, 2017 / 5:49 pm

The packaging itself is to die for lol

    • August 21, 2017 / 7:00 pm

Yeah they do a great job at making their products visually appealing! It’s so much nicer to have a pretty bottle of something on my shelf than a not very exciting bottle xD

  6. August 21, 2017 / 5:04 pm

Looks like a nice set! I am always weary when cosmetic brands come out with skincare but this looks like something good to try 🙂

    • August 21, 2017 / 6:59 pm

It’s not bad actually! I would stay away from the cleanser, but the setting spray was really nice. I think you can honestly get the same quality at the drugstore for cheaper though…

      • August 22, 2017 / 11:28 am

Hmmm good to know. Thanks for being honest!

I loved reading your thoughts on these products. It wasn’t something I was particularly interested in purchasing, but I always love having an opinion on a product, especially from a pretty well known company like tarte. I’m glad that you liked some of the products, and weren’t a fan of others. Can’t wait to read your other reviews! xxx

    • August 21, 2017 / 6:56 pm

Thanks for reading, I appreciate it, especially if you weren’t really interested in the set! I never know what to believe when I read reviews on super prominent brands, sometimes you just have to try it out for yourself!

  8. August 21, 2017 / 8:24 am

I’ve used that marine mist and I love it! I definitely want to buy the full size of it!

    • August 21, 2017 / 11:02 am

Me too!! 🙌 It’s not in stock at Sephora Canada so I might have to settle for the travel size, but it’s definitely worth it!

  9. August 21, 2017 / 7:36 am

That full sized moisturiser is so expensive! Great post, it’d mean a lot if you checked my blog out too x
