The Balm Meet Matte Hughes Liquid Lipstick Review

Oh my gosh everyone, something marvellous has happened! The Balm is FINALLY sold at Shoppers Drug Mart! In 2016 I wrote a post called Beauty Brands I wish Were Sold At Sephora and the Balm was one of the brands I wished I could get my hands on. I saw a full display at Shoppers last week and I was so excited! And the best part was…

The Meet Matte Hughes Liquid Lipsticks were priced at $9.99CAD. I honestly thought that it was a mistake, and it might have been because these lipsticks normally retail for $17USD. Get them now before Shoppers Drug Mart realizes their mistake! I picked up the shade Honest and have been wearing it every day for the last week. Never have I been so excited to try a liquid lipstick.

The Balm Meet Matte Hughes Liquid Lipstick Review

Is your lipstick relationship complicated? Then it’s time to Meet Matt(e) Hughes, our collection of liquid lipsticks that come in 18 swoon-worthy shades. With a matte finish and long-lasting formula, your color will stay true, without being clingy.

The Balm Meet Matte Hughes Liquid Lipstick not only has a clever name, but it’s incredibly affordable in Canada right now. In the United States this lipstick retails for $17USD and contains 0.25oz of product. There are 18 different shades to choose from ranging from pinky nudes to deeper reds.

Packaging

The packaging of the Balm’s liquid lipsticks are sooo cute! I love the cardboard container that holds the lipstick, it’s done up like a newspaper with a cute black and white photo of a guy (matte hughes?) and girl sharing a milkshake with the caption “Bright, smooth talker seeking: Girl with a great smile.” Adorbs!

The lipstick itself has the same cute photo with the Balm’s logo below it on the tube and features a doe foot applicator.

The SMELL is divine! My husband & I both agreed that it smells like Flor de Cana, which is a vanilla spiced rum. I could smell it all day!

Application

I had a slight issue applying this lipstick. Normally when I apply a liquid lipstick I will apply it on my bottom lip, then rub my lips together before touching up the cupids bow. I do not recommend rubbing your lips together before the lipstick is dry. For some reason it pushed all of the pigment to the outer edges of my lips leaving the centre bare.

I have to do the full instagram swatch thing where I swipe the lipstick across the bottom & top lip separately. It’s not a big deal, just something I have to get used to since my usual way of applying lipstick doesn’t work.

You need to let this lipstick sit on the lips for a minute or two to let it dry. It’s tacky at first but it will eventually dry down to a matte finish.

Performance

Aside from the issues that I initially had with the application of the Meet Matte Hughes Liquid Lipstick overall it wears pretty well. I need to be careful eating and drinking, we had a mojito & pizza night and it was gone by the end of the night. But keep in mind that I did eat a lot of Pizza!

It didn’t fade un-naturally or smudge all over my face either which was a bonus.

When I’m just going about my day normally I have maybe a cup of coffee and a snack in the afternoon and I’ll typically need to touch up my makeup after the 4 hour mark.

I don’t think that Meet Matte Hughes liquid Lipstick is nearly as long wearing as The Balm claims, it’s literally written on the packaging and I don’t find that it lasts any longer than a liquid lipstick from ColourPop. I’m not going to complain for the $9.99CAD I paid for this lipstick, but I don’t think I would buy another if they priced it to match the American SRP.

Yellow Glitter & Coral lipstick

Pros:

  • Smells great
  • no feathering
  • doesn’t cake into lip lines
  • fades naturally

Cons:

  • Not as long lasting as I hoped
  • Expensive (in the US)
  • Application is a little tricky

Have you tried the Balm Cosmetics?

Let me know what you think of the Balm Meet Matt(e) Hughes Liquid Lipstick? The packaging gets an A+ from me, and the performance is a solid B. This isn’t my perfect lipstick but I certainly like it enough to buy more shades if the price stays under $10CAD!

Thank you for reading, talk soon!

I’m not the biggest fan of any of The Balm products but oh my gosh, their packaging has got to be the best out there! Always artistic, creative, & fun. πŸ™‚ Hopefully they don’t raise the price at your store & you can buy more shades!

The packaging is so cute! I hope so too πŸ’•

I got to try this lipstick in a different shade of course, a few years back when I was subbed to ipsy. It was one of my favorites. The formula I think was really great, I dont remember needing to reapply. Of course, any lipstick will not wear for very long with oily foods, I don’t remember how long it lasted me, that was so long ago.
Lucky that you found it much cheaper, it’s one of the reasons i haven’t repurchased it because it’s so pricey!!
Great review and that looks like a great shade!

I can’t believe that it’s still $10 at Shoppers! That’s crazy to me! I’m glad that you liked this lipstick so much too. I always see the mini sets at Marshalls for around $10 too, I know you don’t have one near you anymore though πŸ™ But it’s worth a look if you ever happen to be nearby one!

      • August 14, 2019 / 8:41 am

Is it really? Maybe they’ve dropped their prices a bit over there? I’ll have to check if it’s still $17 here, I’m sure it is lol.
Awh yeah the nearest Marshall’s is about 40 mins away near the airport and I dont really have any business going all the way over there lmao. But I hear a lot of people find high end makeup at TJ Maxxx too so I can try that place as well. Sorry if I’ve already said that. I need to get better at replying to my comments lol

It’s so weird though! Things are never cheaper in Canada!
Oh yeah 40 minutes is way too far. I think they’re owned by the same company, I could be wrong! I don’t think you’ve said that before, but no worries if you did πŸ˜… I’m only catching up on comments now

          • August 18, 2019 / 9:27 pm

Well you should get more just in case it is a mistake! These liquid lips are so good!

          • August 21, 2019 / 5:44 pm

            Lol absolutely!!

Never tried any lip products from The Balm yet, cause the brand is weirdly hard to get around me. I think only Kohl’s carries it here, but it seems perfect for Ulta. Hopefully one day they’ll carry The Balm! Anyways I had heard these were good quality liquid lips. If they perform well and last I would gladly pay the $17, but that application issue you mention seems odd!

    • August 6, 2019 / 9:00 pm

It’s strange that they aren’t offered in many stores! You’d think they would want to be in Ulta and Sephora. The fading is super weird! I’ve gotten used to it but it would be nice if I could just apply it like any other liquid Lipstick πŸ˜… Thanks for reading πŸ’•

London Drugs actually used to carry The Balm, but they stopped stocking their stuff a few years ago! πŸ™ These still retail at $9.99 at Shoppers, for some reason. They still haven’t realized they made a mistake with the pricing?! I didn’t pick any up because my chronically dry lips are so over matte liquid lipsticks, haha. This shade is stunning on you though!

I wish SDM had a more expansive collection of The Balm products (or maybe just the one I went to had a smaller selection, I don’t know). There are some blushes I’ve wanted to pick up for YEARS but they didn’t stock them!

    • August 4, 2019 / 1:03 am

I didn’t know that! I’ve been looking for places that stocked their products for so long. Maybe for some strange reason they decided to make them cheaper here, it’s bizarre because Canada rarely gets deals like that! The lip glosses are also only $10!

I hope they’ll expand their collection, maybe they’re just starting small at first. Thanks for reading!

This shade is beautiful on you! I agree the name and the packaging is cute! The only product I’ve tried from The Balm is Mary-Lou Manizer πŸ™‚

    • August 4, 2019 / 1:01 am

I’ve only tried a few sample sizes before this! Do you like the Mary-Lou Manizer? and omg I JUST realized that it’s a pun for luminizer…

      • August 4, 2019 / 1:44 am

I do like it, it’s a lovely highlighter and works great as a base eyeshadow too πŸ™‚

That sounds amazing! Good on you for getting it cheaper than the normal retail price, LOL! The description of the smell sounds so lovely. I really love matte lipsticks so this is worth looking into! Thanks for sharing Cleia!
