Violet Voss Essentials Palette | 3 Looks & review

Have you ever been completely and entirely surprised by how good a makeup product is? That was my exact experience with the Violet Voss Essentials Palette. Prior to receiving it in my September Boxycharm I had heard mixed things about Violet Voss, so I was completely thrown by just how buttery & blendable the matte shadows are!

Today I wanted to share my review of the Violet Voss Essentials palette, plus three looks I created with it. Let’s get started x

Violet Voss Essentials Palette Review + 3 Looks

Violet Voss Essentials Palette Review

The Essentials palette from Violet Voss retails for $29USD and contains 10 eyeshadows. There are an equal ratio of mattes to shimmers and there is a variety of warm tones & jewell tones. When I first looked at the palette I didn’t feel particularly inspired, but the way the shades wear on the eyes more than make up for it.

Packaging

I don’t know about you, but I love cardboard packaging. It has so much more cushion to it than plastic packaging and I’m more comfortable packing a palette like this in my travel bag. I’ve dropped my fair share of plastic and cardboard palettes and eye shadows are far more likely to shatter in a plastic palette.

The design is black with a rainbow of colour spelling out the word Essentials. The inside of the palette contains a mirror (yay!) and 10 square eyeshadow pans. The packaging is pretty basic — not too flashy — but I wouldn’t really expect anything more from a palette called Essentials. I’ll save the fancy packaging for my special occasion palettes!

Colour Story

The Violet Voss Essentials palette isn’t a neutral palette. There are some soft pinks & oranges which work for every day and the jewel tones really do make the palette more interesting. I was absolutely dying to do a look with the emerald green shade! You can find my Autumn Mermaid look below. The Essentials palette really feels like a Fall palette to me.

#fallfeels

All the warm toned mattes in the Essentials palette are giving me ABH soft glam vibes. It’s not a dupe by any means but the orange & pink shades are similar to the Soft Glam. I’m loving the look of the purple & green jewel tones in the Essentials palette, they look so interesting!

I wish that the gold shade was more of a bronzey gold, I think the yellow gold looks weird when worn with any of the other shades in the palette. A bronzier shade would have gone better with all the oranges.

After using the Violet Voss Essentials palette for a few weeks I’m finding that it’s not really an “essential” palette for me. When I think if essentials I really gravitate towards neutral browns, and I’m having a hard time coming up with a basic everyday eye with these shades. They’re pretty and the formula is lovely, but I’m still going to go with my ColourPop Brown Sugar or Double Entendre palettes over the Essentials palette.

Violet Voss Essentials

Pigmentation, Fallout & Blend

The mattes are incredibly buttery and smooth! They blend absolutely beautifully on the eyes. They build up quite nicely with minimal fallout. They aren’t patchy or powdery at all and I absolutely love working with these mattes! I think I’ll be asking for some of the mini Violet Voss palettes for Christmas this year…

The shimmers are actually on shimmery side. They don’t have a ton of glitter but they don’t look foiled on the eyes either. I get a ton of fallout under my eyes when I used the purple shimmer Plum Berry so I try to remember to do my eyes first when I use it.

Fallout is kind of a given in the beauty world so I don’t count fallout as a negative when I review eyeshadow.

Violet Voss Essentials Palette Swatches

Violet Voss Swatches

I did these quick swatches with just my fingers. I didn’t use any base or primer, I was in a bit of a rush! Sometimes I prefer regular arm swatches to using stencils. They give you a truer representation of what the eyeshadow will look like on the eyes, where as swatch art can be a little misleading.

Créme: pearly white shimmer
Sand: pale orange matte
Terracotta: More of an orange matte than a terracotta
Gold: yellow gold shimmer
Emerald: mermaid green shimmer
Pink: shimmering pink
Dusty Rose: matte
Plum Berry: shimmering purple
Cinnamon: dusty matte red-brown
Black: Not the blackest matte black out there.

Violet Voss Essentials Makeup Looks

Autumn Mermaid

Can you think of a better name for this look!? I sure can’t! I made many high pitched squealing sounds when I saw how beautiful that mermaid tail green was applied wet all over my eyelids. I noticed that I got a lot less fallout and a more foiled finish when I applied the shimmers wet so that’s what I’ve been doing. To wet my brush I’ve been using the Pixi Makeup Fixing Mist. It smells so nice and makes a fabulous last step in my makeup routine.

I literally can’t get over this leewwwk!

Something Wicked This Way Comes

Okay, so this look doesn’t entirely showcase the palette but I’m branching out and trying new makeup looks these days. I watched an allanarama makeup video where she was learning to do a classic smokey eye at 26, and I was like, I’m 26 I should know how to do this. So here we are, and I wish I had tried it sooner!

I took a creamy black pencil liner from Pixi (the Marc Jacobs Highliner pencil is great too) and drew a messy line across my eyelid. I immediately smudged the line with a flat brush. Next I smoked out the corners and my lower lash line with the black shade in the Violet Voss Essentials palette!

I’m finally starting to see the benefit of having a black shadow in an eyeshadow palette. I always felt like black made me look like a racoon, or a ghost because I’m so pale but it actually really worked out here!

Good Mornin’ Pumpkin

I have a mug that says that, and it gives me alll the Fall vibes! It’s literally my favourite thing in the morning. I wanted to create a cute little orange eyeshadow look that was simple enough to wear everyday and I think this is it.

I loved how soft & simple this look came out, but I have to confess: I also used the ColourPop Double Entendre palette here. I’m obsessed with the bronze shades and felt that the oranges in the Essentials palette really needed some bronze to go with them!

I’m also wearing my new Amuse Bouche lipstick from Bite Beauty. This is the shade Lit Turmeric. All the original line is getting discontinued so right now you can grab your favourite shade for $15!

What do you think of the Violet Voss Essentials Palette?

I’m glad I got to try this formula through boxycharm. I wouldn’t have spend my money on this palette at full price but it was a nice intro to the VV formula. I would absolutely pick up some of her mini palettes in the future. Thanks for reading, happy Friday! x

Holy crap, Cleia!!! The Mermaid look is sooo pretty. That emerald green is truly something else. It’s so vibrant & you applied it so clean & precise. I also LOVE the smoky eye, it’s perfect!!

I’ve been wanting to try the VV eyeshadows, the minis would be such a great gift for Christmas. Maybe I’ll buy myself one, hehe. Awesome review, as always & seriously amazing looks!!

Those colors are stunning! And I love how you used them! Halloween made me want to expand my make-up collection. (which is sadly very small and basic. Lol) I always love your tutorials! <3

That’s interesting that you heard mixed reviews about VV. People used to literally RAVE about this brand, all the damn time and when I finally got the Holy Grail palette in my December Luxe I was blown away! Naturally when I got this one too, I expected no less from it.
I’m so glad you liked the formula too! I’d agree that its not an “essential” palette or color story given that some shades cant reslly be worn in an every day kind of look because they’re a bit bolder for say, work environment. But the palette itself is so pretty.
Loved all the looks you came up with. Great review!

I’m glad that the rave reviews were right! I was blown away by how creamy all the mattes are. It’s really unique though once you start putting those colors together, I’m glad I got it!
      Thanks Rossy!

Wow, love all the looks you created, particularly the green one but I’m drawn to everything emerald at the moment! I do love Violet Voss as an eyeshadow brand I have 4 of their palettes and the quality is always fantastic!

Looking at the three eye looks in isolation from this post I wouldn’t guess they all came from the same palette but that’s a good thing, this palette has a nice range of shades and is versatile! The first two looks are stunning, the green shimmer really makes your eyes pop <3

    • October 22, 2019 / 11:31 pm

That’s a good thing! I’m glad there are so many unique color options in here 😊

I never heard of Violet Voss before your Boxycharm post, but I’m absolutely loving this palette!! It’s gorgeous & versatile. The shadows look so buttery and pigmented. I tend to love the look of palettes with a variety of different shades these days. All of your makeup looks came out SO beautifully, Cleia!! The smokey eye look brings out your eyes! ✨You look gorgeous!! And the Autumn Mermaid look is amazing!! I love the name because it’s so festive and the look totally gives me mermaid vibes. Green shades are lovely, especially for fall and winter! 💚
