Why I’m not buying the ColourPop Disney Designer Collection

aWhy I'm not buying the colourpop disney designer collectionIt’s too soon for another anti-haul since I posted one a few weeks ago, but ColourPop just released a new collab that has me worked up to the point of writing and entire post about why I’m not buying the ColourPop Disney Designer Collection. Also known (by me) as the collab that had so much potential but instead settled to be mediocre. I love ColourPop and I love Disney. Frozen is my second favourite movie, and I absolutely loved Aladdin growing up. I could watch Moana over and over again, so why don’t I like this collaboration? Let me tell you..

ColourPop Disney Designer Collection Packaging

The ColourPop Disney Designer Collection seems to have been designed to look like an upscale luxury collection. ColourPop’s designers always do a great job with their PR boxes, I can’t deny that the packaging is eye catching. But I thought for a Disney collaboration there should have been more “Disney” to the collection once you throw away the cardboard inserts.

The palette has made up signatures for each princess, as does each lipstick.  Aside from that there is nothing about the packaging that really feels special and princessy to me. The Lux lipstick packaging is exactly the same as the ColourPop’s regular Lux lipsticks aside from that signature. And just from experience with my own ColourPop products their labels wear away quite fast on their lipsticks.

Lux Lipstick Choice for Each Princess

The lipstick shade ranges don’t match my perception of the princesses with the exception of Snow White, which is the most basic red there is. It’s a lovely red, don’t get me wrong but is it really special? Does it really warrant a purchase just because it has Snow White’s name on it? And what is up with that hot pink for Jasmine? I LOVE Jasmine, she’s my favourite disney princess aside from Anna from Frozen. I don’t understand why that hot pink is Jasmine’s shade, it’s not even remotely close to her lipstick in the movies.

The shade they chose for Belle is pretty but I think overall Disney & ColourPop could have done better.

It’s A Princess Thing Eyeshadow Palette

I appreciate that ColourPop named the shades in the It’s A Princess Thing Palette according to things that they actually resemble but the only way I can describe this palette is basic. I would buy it for a 12 year old who wanted to experiment with their first eyeshadow palette, but for me these pinks and neutrals are so boring. The only two shades that interest me in this palette are Ray and Poison Apple.

I would have liked to see shades that reflected princesses who are fun and feminine while also being strong and independent. All those boring neutral pink shades seem like they tried to emulate a prim and proper idealistic woman. Why couldn’t we have an orange called Rajah for Jasmine’s tiger? Or a Bright Yellow for Flounder, Ariels best friend? Shades like that would have been so much more unique to me and might have actually inspired me to buy the palette. I want a palette for the adventurous princess, not a designer princess.

To Be Fair…

There are a few products in the ColourPop Disney Designer Collection that actually look nice to me. Like I said, I do like the look of the Belle Lux Lipstick, and I think the Bobbity lipgloss is pretty. I think these products would be nice if released as regular ColourPop products but there is nothing special about them that makes me think Disney aside from the signatures.

If you love the idea of the Disney Designer Makeup Collection you absolutely don’t have to listen to me. If you’re feeling these shades and feel they will help you unleash your inner princess then go for it! I just expected more from a franchise I’ve watched since I was five years old.

I wish that ColourPop would cool it on the new releases. I’m ColourPop’d out. It’s exhausting trying to keep up with their releases, let alone the releases of every other makeup brand out there. I still love ColourPop’s formula and I have tons of positive reviews of their products up on my blog. The Disney Designer Collection unfortunately left me disappointed.

What do you think of the ColourPop Disney Designer Collection?
Will you be buying it?

Thanks for reading! I’m really curious about what you guys will think about this collection, I was initially so excited when I heard that ColourPop would be collaborating with Disney but once I saw the products it fell flat for me. Let me know what you think of this collection!

It’s because the collection is based on the new Disney Designer dolls I think so not the movies. I assume that’s why it only features these princesses. Lots of other great Disney women that aren’t in the designer collection that I’d like to see but hopefully there’s opportunity for more collaborations in the future!

Oh shoot, I didn’t realize that there were dolls coming out. Thank you for clearing that up! I still felt underwhelmed but the collection makes a bit more sense to me now.

      • October 15, 2018 / 1:16 pm

Nor did I, I just heard someone else say it 😂 but yeah they look like the princesses are on the packaging I think

  2. October 11, 2018 / 8:17 am

I adored the outer packaging of this collection, I thought that the boxes were too cute. However, I do agree with the lipstick color selection, most of them seem a little bit off except for Snow White. I still ended up with a few things from this collection, but it’s nothing to jump up and down about.

The cardboard packaging was cute, I wish the actual product packaging had more of a Disney design. I hope that you enjoy the pieces of the collection that you picked up!

      • October 11, 2018 / 1:28 pm

Thus far I think everything is pretty good and I’m pretty happy with my picks, but I haven’t tried them enough to give them the full test. Haha. I do really wish they had done more with the actual product packaging, the outside of the eyeshadow palette is the only thing that is really cute, but the inside with the signatures just looks a little bit off to me.

          October 11, 2018 / 9:12 pm

As long as you like the actual products, that’s what matters. Packaging is second. I just expected more when a company as huge as Disney is collabing!

          • October 12, 2018 / 1:29 pm

I did to, it’s very lackluster.

  3. October 5, 2018 / 8:30 pm

I totally agree with this post! I got so excited when I saw Colourpop was releasing a Disney collection! I love Disney! Jasmine is my favorite too!!
But you’re right. How basic. Why weren’t the shades more like the princesses? Where did those shades even come from? I mean come on! You could have so much fun with colors! It’s Disney!!! What about a bright yellow like Belle’s ball gown? More color was definitely needed!
Also when I looked at the lipsticks I was like… what? Snow White really is the only one who makes sense!
I decided not to buy it too. What a bummer!

    • AlwaysCleia
      October 6, 2018 / 4:40 pm

I was so disappointed by all the boring pinks and neutrals! All of these princesses have so much character so I wish the palette reflected that 🙁 A yellow for Belle’s gown would have been perfect!
I think the lipstick shades would have been fine as regular lux lipstick shades but I’m not seeing the princesses in any of them but Snow White either…
      Thanks for reading!

      • October 6, 2018 / 5:03 pm

I hope they decide to make a new one with more accurate shades! I still think someone should hire us to come up with shades and names! Hahah

          October 6, 2018 / 5:19 pm

Agreed on both counts! Polished & Inspired suggested they do a Disney Villains collection which I think has potential to be amazing!

          • October 6, 2018 / 5:20 pm

😱 That would be amazing!!! I would be more mad if they messed up a villains palette!

            October 6, 2018 / 7:10 pm

I would love to see an Ursula lipstick and the green Maleficent eyeshadow!!

          • October 6, 2018 / 7:23 pm

            Omg yes!!! 😻😻😻

  4. October 1, 2018 / 10:25 pm

Honestly I had the same feelings towards it more or less and I do agree that it’s more designer than actual Disney. The palette looks so boring and one I would never use. The lipsticks should have been more than their actual lux lippies too. They missed a giant opportunity here to be creative with the packaging as well as the entire collection I didn’t even bother to see KL’s review of it because I was like “that doesn’t look exciting at all”

    • AlwaysCleia
      October 2, 2018 / 12:01 am

I completely agree! I did watch her Disney review, but I wasn’t impressed by the collection at all. I wish Colourpop would focus more on making new collections interesting instead of releasing way too many things one after another.

      • October 2, 2018 / 2:55 am

NO KIDDING!! I’m so overwhelmed by all the things they have released this year alone that I’m passing on everything until I can make up my mind LOL, I’m sure I’ll miss a few palettes if they’re not permanent but still…

        • AlwaysCleia
          October 2, 2018 / 2:19 pm

Who really needs every single makeup release anyways? It’s probably healthy to skip a few!

          • October 2, 2018 / 8:38 pm

Good for me then because I’ve skipped them all lol

This collection is so BORING. The palette doesn’t even match ‘princess’ in my mind at all. I actually bought all the lipsticks today, minus Tiana became she sold out while I was checking out.
I actually think the lipsticks match pretty well to the princesses, in my opinion. I wasn’t matching them to the movies, but more to what color I could see them wearing in real life. I think Jasmine was hot pink because she’s bold and extroverted, but that’s just my take on it. I’m only really buying the lipsticks because I think they are the prettiest out of everything. and more as a makeup collector. I like that the lids have the princesses signatures on the lid to display.
I would have liked to see Mulan, Moana, and Anna involved in this collection.
I was just super unimpressed with this collection all in all, which is really disappointing because it could have been so awesome.

I knooowww it’s not what I would expect from the “modern” princess, since they were going for a more upscale designer look. 🙁
I think all the shades are pretty but I just couldn’t picture her in it for some reason. But you’re right, describing it that way does match her personality! I hope you love the lipsticks, if I bought anything from this collection it would be lipstick.
There are sooo many princesses I would have loved to see, I would have loved a Nala shade in that palette, I love the lion king! Though Nala doesn’t exactly wear lipstick lol
      Maybe they’ll expand the collection…

I agree! Though I’ve bought the palette and the Ariel lipstick, and I think I’ll get some use out of it and I love Disney, you’re so right! I feel like this collection was Colourpop’s attempt to appeal to an older audience and not come off childish, that’s just my guess, but it’s really quite forgettable and kind of dull. The My Little Pony Palette may be childish-looking but it’s one of my favorites and evokes nostalgia! It included shades that represented the characters and was a good fit, in my opinion.

This could’ve been a great opportunity for Colourpop to get colorful and incorporate, like you said, colors that represent the Princesses and their movies.

Great post and love all this discussion! 💕

I hope you’ll be able to get some use out of it! I watched a swatch video and the shades are pretty, I just didn’t find them unique enough. I have the My Little Pony palette too and I love it! I never watched MLP but the shades are so different and vibrant! That’s what I want from disney!

Thank you so much for reading! I’m glad you enjoyed this post xx

  7. September 28, 2018 / 1:02 am

The palette looks pretty but I agree it looks like it would be better for a younger market, the shades are arranged nicely but I don’t like the black outer packaging and the princess names on the inside lid. I’m going to Google swatches of it though to see if it still looks as pretty 😛

      September 30, 2018 / 12:48 am

If you watch Thatgirlshae on youtube she has a full video up of the collection where she swatches each lipstick on her lips and each shade in the eyeshadow palette on her eyes! I love her swatching videos, it gives you a better idea of what the shades will look like on the eyes as opposed to arm swatches.

If I was a 13 year old girl I would probably love this collection, but I missed that boat by a decade!

      • September 30, 2018 / 12:50 am

Thanks, I might look her up 🙂

  8. September 27, 2018 / 6:10 pm

I totally know what you mean about this collection. To be honest, I find a lot of ColourPop’s palettes a bit on the boring side…if you take away the one or two unique/pop of colour shades found in each of their palettes, they all become a neutral palette. But that seems be an unpopular opinion, since ColourPop palettes are so hugely popular.

Maybe they chose the bright pink for Jasmine because otherwise the lipsticks in the collection would just consist mostly of neutrals and reds? That’s the only explanation I can think of. I love the Belle shade though, and I think they actually got the shade really right!

I feel like most of the people buying from this collection will be huge Disney fans, because other than the Disney association it doesn’t offer much else for non-Disney fans or casual fans. I was SO excited when I first heard about the collab because I’ll fork over money for anything Disney, but even I’m pretty iffy on it.

I know ColourPop teamed up with Disney to release these products as a part of the Disney Designer Collection Series, but it would be cool to see them collab on a Disney villains collection.

I see what you mean when I look at my ColourPop collection. I still love my palettes but lately I’ve been bored with their releases.
That could be it, if I strip away the disney name the shades do have lots of variety. It just didn’t strike me as a Jasmine colour! I would probably order that Belle shade in a future order. I watched a live swatching video with thatgirlshae and that shade is beautiful.

I think this collection would do great with a younger market, like tweens to teens? Maybe girls who don’t have a lot of makeup already and love Disney it would be a good introduction. I wonder if they’ll put the disney collection in Ulta.

A disney villains collection would be amazing! It would probably have a lot more variety and possibly feature more interesting shades. I can already imagine the lipstick shades they could do for Ursula!

  9. September 27, 2018 / 10:41 am

Omg, you literally read my mind. I was super disappointed by the palette, and while I thought the lipstick colors were pretty, you were right, right after you throw out the box, there really isn’t anything to show that it’s from the disney colection. I completely understand why you feel the way you feel, even though I’ll probably still buy some of the lipsticks. Great post Cleia xx

I do love that Belle lipstick so I would probably include it with a future order, but because I love the shade not because it’s disney 🙁
The palette could have been so much more interesting, I’m disappointed that they played it safe with all the pinks.

      Thanks for reading Melina! xx

      • September 28, 2018 / 2:21 pm

Agreed, i would get the belle and ariel not because of the disney, but the shades are stunning, and i love the price too!

  10. September 27, 2018 / 10:39 am

I’m a pretty hardcore Disney fanatic so I’ll likely end up buying a couple things, but the biggest issue for me is the signatures. When you’re in Disney World and ask for an autograph from Tiana, Belle or Snow White, this is what it’ll look like. Ariel, Cinderella and Jasmine have very different signatures than what’s on these products. Why? That makes no sense.

I know it’s probably a weird detail to be bugged by, but in my mind it’s almost like fraud. WHO FORGED JASMINE’S NAME?!!

I do like that they included a couple WoC for this collection, despite the fact that they’re only a third of the princesses represented. I’d like to see a more edgy collection with some princesses who don’t fit the standard mold, like Merida and Moana. You know, the ones who think for themselves and have their own adventures.

    • AlwaysCleia
      September 28, 2018 / 12:43 pm

I didn’t know that about the signatures, that’s so weird! You would think that Disney would standardize a detail like that across their products.

I would have loved to see Moana in the collection, it was the last Disney movie that I watched and I loved it! I haven’t seen Brave yet with Merida but I’ve been meaning to watch it. Maybe they will release a ColourPop Disney 2.0 collection with more diversity. Thanks for your input, I appreciate you taking the time to read & comment! xx

I was disappointed with the color selection in the palette too! There are so many pinks and I just feel like I don’t wear a ton of pink anyway and have all that I need. Also, with brands releasing new products every single day, I feel like we need a daily anti-haul! I cannot believe how many new products have dropped or been announced in the last couple of weeks, it takes the fun out of being a makeup junkie :/ I’m with you on this one!!

    • AlwaysCleia
      September 27, 2018 / 11:12 am

It’s the most boring palette to me, there are waaay too many pinks! I didn’t want another mostly neutral palette 🙁

Yes totally, there’s so many new products on trendmood every single day and it’s just too much. I wonder how much money brands could possibly be making off of it because who really has the money for every release?

      Thanks for reading! xx
